Despite its status as one of the longest-running and most lucrative franchises, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn't without its faults, and over the course of the billion-dollar franchise, it's had its fair share of controversial moments embedded in more than one movie or series.

Most of the controversies led to the division of the fanbase, especially when it came to how some of the plans were foiled by the easiest tricks in the book, most of which occurred during the recent Avengers films.

Here are the top 7 most controversial moments in the MCU:

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for future MCU films and series, so READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

  1. Loki’s Sudden Death (Avengers: Infinity War)

Many MCU diehards expected Avengers: Infinity War to depict multiple deaths, considering that long-term veteran actors such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson were nearly at the end of their contract.

Of the deaths, Loki's was the most disappointing. Known as the God of Mischief for his highly calculated manipulative tactics when it comes to pulling one over his opponents, the way he faced Thanos was uncharacteristic.

Instead of coming up with a plan to somehow save his skin and his brother Thor from getting killed, he charged Thanos with a small sword, leading to his death by choking by his hands.

Initially, many were convinced that the corpse was a set-up for the real thing that fled the scene. However, it was not. The main MCU Loki was dead then and there.

Except since the Multiverse exists, a Time Heist Loki variant escaped his timeline and led his own series of being captured by the Time Variance Authority.

  2. Star-Lord Punches Thanos (Avengers: Infinity War)

How could anyone forget their hatred towards Peter Quill? The Mad Titan had sacrificed his own adoptive daughter to claim the Soul Stone for his Infinity Gauntlet and meet the end of his plan to vanquish half of the Earth's population.

At the time, Tony Stark and Star-Lord came up with a plan to take Thanos' Gauntlet off his arm so that he'd be rid of wielding the power altogether.

Distraught after losing Gamora to Thanos' selfish gains, however, Quill took this one opportunity to face him and as a part of his small revenge, he punched Thanos, which made Mantis let go of her control over his head, thus letting him escape.

  3. Captain America Grows Old (Avengers: Endgame)

Although Captain America has mentally grown older than he looks, the Super Soldier serum can only protect him from physical injuries. But it didn't take away his love for Peggy Carter from his heart.

We have witnessed how throughout his appearances in the MCU, Steve would almost always come back to staring at Peggy's picture from a locket he holds dear, and even though he has had a past fling with her granddaughter, Sharon, his heart definitely stayed with Peggy's.

What he promised Hulk, Bucky, and Sam that he would return to the present time as the same ol' Cap turned out to be a lie. Instead of coming back as the good ol' Cap we know, he returned as an old man who chose to spend his lifetime with the love of his life.

Many found this quite controversial since he basically left Bucky and the rest of the Avengers for his personal pursuits. But it was still a good transition in having Sam take the mantle of becoming the new Captain America.

  4. G’iah Becoming the Most Overpowered MCU Character (Secret Invasion)

Emilia Clarke nailed her role as the Skrull Talos’ grownup daughter, G’iah, in Secret Invasion, however, many found the Nick Fury series itself a bit too rushed for anyone’s tastes.

The Super Skrulls have finally entered the MCU and despite the series focusing on the Skrulls and Fury’s promise to them, it fell short of every fan’s expectations. Especially since this is Clarke’s official entry into the MCU.

G’iah became one of the Super Skrulls and with the help of being allies with Fury, the one-eyed agent supported her by handing over the Harvest (aka the Avengers’ DNA) which granted her the powers of the Hulk, Captain Marvel, and many other MCU heroes.

Hopefully, this won’t be the last time we’re seeing her on the small screens. There’s a chance she could be most useful if she joins the new Avengers team, whenever that happens.

  5. Peter Parker Uses Tony Stark’s High-Tech Spider-Man Suits (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

One of the most confusing things about the MCU's Peter Parker is that no one knows what kind of Spider-Man he is. Sure, he was employed by Tony in Captain America: Civil War because he had Spidey powers, but ever since then, who is Spider-Man, really?

The web-slinger possessed the strength, smarts, and agility of being Spider-Man, but his suit begs to differ, as most of what he wore in his entire MCU run mostly came from Stark or his high-tech equipment when Parker is dealing with a crisis.

Perhaps if Spider-Man 4 comes to fruition someday, we might get a new angle on what type of friendly neighbor Spidey is trying to be.

  6. Black Widow Sacrifices Herself (Avengers: Endgame)

There is no doubt that of all the original six members of the Avengers, Hawkeye, and Black Widow were the weakest from the rest. Though they have shown great merit and ability in maintaining their posts, Black Widow was more favorable in staying longer in the superhero franchise.

Unfortunately, since she had chosen to sacrifice herself instead of letting Clint take her place, many MCU fans felt dumbfounded at this decision. If you think about it, since Hawkeye was retired from the hero work, Black Widow's staying would have made more sense.

In fact, she could've easily been working side-by-side with Nick Fury during Secret Invasion. Maybe she would have kept Maria Hill from dying.

  7. The Scarlet Witch Gets Away With What Happened in Westview (WandaVision)

Wanda Maximoff was grieving over Vision's death after the events of Avengers: Endgame. As much as she wanted to remain the good guy, as Vision said, "What is grief if not love persevering?"

Despite having to hold on to what the Sokovia Accords required from the Avengers, she stole Vision's Vibranium body from SWORD's establishment and terrorized the entire town of Westview to adhere to how she's coping with her loss.

By the end of WandaVision, though she defeated Agatha Harkness from her evil plan to take control of her Chaos Magic, Wanda was still the perpetrator and needed to be locked up.

Many MCU fans found this to be too easy of a slip-up, especially since the franchise usually had to hold them accountable for their faults and actions.
