Tony Stark is first and foremost a 'genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist' and he's put his wealth to good use by inventing artificially intelligent assistants that have run by his side since the beginning.

It just so happens that the more he progressed in improving his Iron Man suits and his duty as part of the Avengers, the more refined his A.I. systems became. Heck, enough to even transform one into a Vibranium-made synthezoid.

However, there might be a slight confusion among Tony Stark’s variety of A.I. assistants. Such as, are JARVIS and FRIDAY the same? What’s the big difference?

Voiced by Paul Bettany, J.A.R.V.I.S. stands for ‘Just A Rather Very Intelligent System’.

As Tony Stark’s original artificially intelligent ‘butler’, JARVIS was inspired by an actual butler named Edwin Jarvis, the man who served Tony’s father, Howard Stark.

JARVIS was largely used for Tony’s major projects, and in this case, it was in preparation for his first official Iron Man suit before it was even rendered its flashy color ‘hot rod red.’

JARVIS basically has everything about the suit locked down from pre- to post-rendering of the Iron Man.

The A.I. system possessed abilities that would ensure the safety of its user (Tony), including examining the atmospheric and environmental factors and predicting the capabilities and limitations of the suit.

The AI was able to save Tony before he ran out of air when he was stuck underwater. JARVIS managed to detach the arm of the suit to help Tony escape.

It can also assess a particular situation where Stark has to detect power sources and use them to their advantage during battle.

JARVIS was responsible for analyzing the foreign artifact they withheld from the God of Mischief, Loki, after their battle in The Avengers, too.

It even managed to outsmart Ultron (another AI created by Tony and Bruce Banner) even after the evil AI built himself from Vibranium-made material.

What makes JARVIS stand out, though, is the fact that he was eventually turned into a Vibranium-made synthetic android body powered by one of the six Infinity Stones, the Mind Stone.

Plus, he eventually evolved so much into humanity that he ended up developing human emotions and physicality, thus Vision was born.

Despite Vision's evolution though, developing humanity within him caused malfunctions no AI should be able to miscalculate (when he missed firing Falcon and hit War Machine).

F.R.I.D.A.Y., The Replacement for JARVIS

Of course, with the absence of JARVIS aka Vision, Tony had to make a new AI assistant. Then comes F.R.I.D.A.Y., which stands for ‘Female Replacement Intelligent Digital Assistant Youth.’

As the name suggests, FRIDAY is actually the replacement for JARVIS. Instead of having JARVIS’ male-patterned English accent for voice, FRIDAY has a female Irish accent.

FRIDAY was highly improved because apart from detecting small nearby environmental factors, the female AI assistant can also detect and predict the fight patterns of Tony Stark’s opponents.

With that, Tony was able to counter-attack thanks to FRIDAY’s intel, which is exactly what happened while he was fighting against Captain America in Civil War.

FRIDAY can also estimate the projected damage in dealing with any enemy they might go up against and can deploy clean-up measures for when the system detects the Iron Man suit has been infiltrated.

The best example here would be the time when Ant-Man had shrunken down to shut down Iron Man’s functionalities within the suit. To that, FRIDAY was quick to extinguish Ant-Man out of Stark’s suit.

Aside from these, FRIDAY’s advanced systems can also lead to analytical scanning for critical injuries and immediately call for the ambulance as a part of emergency measures.

What makes FRIDAY even more powerful than JARVIS is that FRIDAY’s the AI in charge of controlling the Avengers building protocol, as seen in Avengers: Endgame when Tony had to shut down all windows for safety trial and error mode in their time heist.

Other AI Assistants Tony Stark Created

As it so happens, there are two more AI assistants created by Tony Stark himself before he died, and these are named Karen and Edith.

You could say he created Karen and Edith for the sake of keeping Peter Parker safe beyond Stark’s grave, considering Spider-Man’s the one who’s seen being in use of both AI systems.

First off, Karen is essentially the main user interface for Peter’s Spider-Man suit. This includes a tutorial to help him navigate the suit a little better in a short amount of time and provide basic assistance the web-slinger might need on his superhero duties.

Karen possesses nearly each and every ability JARVIS and FRIDAY have showcased, but with more specific functions for the Spider-Man suit.

This includes the capability of switching to different combat modes, face scanning recognition and recording conversations, assessing the accuracy of Peter Parker’s performance to save the situation, and even offering companionship to Peter when he needs advice or a friend to talk to.

Edith, on the other hand, is the last AI assistant Stark has left on Earth, as told in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Edith was the main AI for Stark’s glasses, which he entrusted over to Peter Parker. What the AI name stands for has an endearing Tony Stark side written all over it: Even Dead I am The Hero.

Practically shouts Spider-Man as Iron Man's prodigy as they look pretty similar with the glasses on.

What makes Edith the most terrifying AI assistant is that it has access to every single Tony Stark invention and global security network. Yes, as in all telecommunication devices that work beyond the vicinity the user is in.

So, it’s completely understandable that when Peter nearly surrendered the Edith glasses to the bad guy, Mysterio, it was evidently the wrong move.

Although, Peter did get to retrieve it by the end of the film. Now learned his lesson of not being easily trusting towards strangers, even by Stark’s own former colleagues.
