This unlikely pairing among two members of the Avengers surprised most MCU fans, but it definitely had the potential to bloom into something more.

Hulk and Black Widow’s first meeting may not have been ideal in trying to recruit Dr. Bruce Banner into the Avengers team, but the chemistry and romantic tension between the two was just undeniable.

However, since the billion-dollar franchise didn’t explicitly reveal the true status of their complicated relationship, many were left guessing what the real score between them actually was. This begs the question, are Hulk and Black Widow really together in the MCU?

As an avid MCU fan, you may have noticed how Hulk and Black Widow’s relationship was never confirmed on the big screens.

Instead, we got a collection of suggestive moments shared between Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff.

One of the clues this relationship could be summed up in was a moment in Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Natasha showed how she was the only member of the team who could calm the Green Goliath down enough to let Bruce Banner back out.

Bruce trusted her enough to make a little ‘lullaby’ to calm the Hulk down. All Natasha has to do is say the code, “Hey, big guy, the sun’s getting real low,” while gently caressing his hand and forearm.

It’s a matter of a ‘Will they, won’t they’ situation when it comes to the Hulk and Black Widow getting together.

At one point, Nat did admit having feelings for Bruce, which he left out in the open, unable to give her a straight answer since they got attacked in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

There had also been moments where Bruce would try to get Nat to join him and leave the Avengers together, clearly out of fear of losing each other. But Nat wouldn’t. They were complete opposites.

At one point, they had even discussed getting together officially. Only, Bruce was quick to reject the idea, since his Hulk would prevent him from giving her any children.

That said, Nat also admitted she has been sterilized since she was trained in the Red Room. (Not exactly a reason not to get together, though).

Unfortunately, they did not. The last time we got to see this couple was in Avengers: Endgame, where their main goal was to save mankind and bring half of the universe’s population back to life.

Their last conversation revolved around trying to convince Bruce he could make time travel work even without Tony Stark to help them out. A bittersweet ending to Hulk and Black Widow.

Infinity War and Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely explained in a previous interview why they decided not to let Hulk and Black Widow conclude their relationship in the MCU:

“We certainly tried [to continue the story]. In Infinity War, we had scenes — we wrote them, we shot them — of them sort of hashing that out. It was, ‘You’ve been gone, I’ve moved on,’ that kind of stuff. But it became very clear that, if a scene was not in the ‘A-plot’, it would not survive to the end of Infinity War… That thing had to be on rails just to get to the finish line. You couldn’t wrap up loose threads just because you wanted to.”

It was just something that couldn’t work, given the circumstances.

It couldn’t be denied that Bruce and Nat were not always on the same page about everything, which ultimately led Hulk to leave the Avengers in Age of Ultron.

Nat wanted to protect the universe and mankind from harm, while Bruce no longer wanted to do anything with the Hulk.

Also, considering that Black Widow also fell to the pits of her death in Endgame, it would be clearly impossible to rehash things back between Bruce and Nat.

Obviously, bringing Nat back to life (in any form in the Multiverse, too) wouldn’t really do anything good for the MCU, either.

So, Bruce would have to find another love interest to meet in the next upcoming Marvel films or series, perhaps.
