What is Call of the Night About?

Call of the Night is based on the manga of the same name by Kotoyama, who is also known for creating the cult classic romcom Dagashi Kashi.

Similar to Dagashi Kashi, Call of the Night is a laid-back slice-of-life teen romance anime, albeit with an added element of fantasy.

The story follows Kou Yamori, a seemingly ordinary boy who, disillusioned by life, decides to quit high school.

With nothing to do and no inspiration, Yamori develops insomnia and starts walking the streets alone at night.

On one walk he meets a strange girl called Nazuna Nanakusa, who shares with him the joys of night walking. When Kou discovers that Nazuna is actually a vampire, he is not put off, and the two form a bond while exploring the enticing call of the night.

Call of the Night will air in Japan on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. Most international fans will be able to watch the series on HIDIVE.

HIDIVE announced in May that that had claimed the international rights to Call of the Night. The series is being licensed by Sentai Filmworks, who own the streaming platform.

While HIDIVE is a relatively new and small streaming service, it offers all the features you would expect. Episodes are usually simulcast around one hour after they air in Japan.

There is no word yet regarding a dub for Call of the Night. However, HIDIVE does offer simuldubs for some of its most popular titles, similar to Crunchyroll.

There's hope that a dub for Call of the Night will be announced once the series starts airing, depending on the fan reaction and viewing figures to early episodes.

What Studio is Producing Call of the Night?

Call of the Night is being produced by LIDENFILMS, a studio most known for producing the hugely popular Tokyo Revengers.

More recently, LIDENFILMS were the studio behind the badminton series Salaryman's Club. They are also producing Netflix’s anticipated series BASTARD‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, which is also part of the Summer 22 season, albeit as one big release in June.

Perhaps more notable than the studio, though, is the prestigious staff attached to the project.

Call of the Night will be directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, a hugely-respected name behind much of the notorious Monogatari series and, more recently, the vampire anime Case Study of Vanitas.

The script is being handled by Michiko Yokote, another notable staff member who did the scripts for smash-hit Gintama and some episodes of Cowboy Bebop.

The sound director for Call of the Night is Eriko Kimura, who performed the same role in many Science Saru anime, including Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken and the recent Masaaki Yuasa movie Inu-Oh.

Kou will be voiced by Gen Satou, most known for playing Chrome in Dr. Stone. Nazuna, meanwhile, will be voiced by Sora Amamiya, one of the most popular female VAs behind Tokyo Ghoul’s Touka, Akame in Akame Ga Kill and, more recently, Himuro in Science Fell in Love.

The opening and ending themes for Call of the Night are being performed by Creepy Nuts, in what will be their first notable anime theme song performance.
