One Piece Film: Red was a highly anticipated film for many reasons, one of which is that it was released as a celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

It also helped that it heavily featured the fan-favorite pirate, Shanks.

Aside from being the highest-grossing film in Japan, One Piece Red also stands out among the other movies of the year for being a musical.

The movie features full-blown song and dance numbers by Uta courtesy of her singing voice, Ado.

For comparison, here are the top five domestic films at Japan’s box office for the whole of 2022:

  1. One Piece Film: Red
  2. Jujutsu Kaisen 0
  3. Suzume no Tojimari
  4. Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween
  5. Kingdom 2: To Distant Lands

Right behind the latest One Piece movie is Jujutsu Kaisen 0, another highly anticipated anime film from a well-known shonen franchise.

In third place is Suzume no Tojimari, the latest film by Makoto Shinkai, one of the most popular contemporary anime directors.

It’s interesting to note that the top four films in Japan are all anime movies. The only exception is Kingdom 2, a live-action film.

Topping the 2022 Japan box office chart isn’t the One Piece movie’s only achievement.

Aside from being the franchise’s fastest and top-selling film, One Piece Film: Red is also now the sixth highest-grossing movie in Japan of all time.

For reference, the only films that have grossed higher than it are Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Your Name, Spirited Away, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.

These records are only based on the film’s Japan box office results though.

In total, One Piece Film: Red has earned over USD 200 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest-earning Japanese film worldwide.

With the film enjoying an impressive theatrical run, it’s pretty much guaranteed that its home video release will be another success.

However, there’s currently no word yet on a Blu-ray release or a streaming premiere for the movie.
