If there is one character Keanu Reeves can be associated with these days, it would definitely be John Wick.
Ever since the first film came out in 2014, people seem to have forgotten that the 58-year-old (yes, he's 58!) actor was in other films like The Matrix movies, Devil's Advocate, and even the 1994 film, Speed. And now, the John Wick movie franchise is on its fourth film, which will be released in just a few weeks.
Now that John Wick: Chapter 4 has already been released in theaters, we want to know (and likely prepare ourselves for the worst): does John Wick die in John Wick 4? Here's what we know right now.
Did John Survive His Fall in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum?
The last time we saw John in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum in 2019, he was shot by Winston (played by Ian McShane), which caused him to fall off the rooftop of the Continental. The hotelier was in front of the High Table's Adjudicator (played by Asia Kate Dillon) when John refused to kill Winston, as ordered by the High Table. Winston then shoots John and says: "Oh, he has to die."
That scene led viewers to believe that Winston had betrayed John. But according to new fan theories, Winston and John may actually be working together. That's because Winston shot John in his armored torso. If he really wanted to kill John, he would have given him a fatal wound-- one that wouldn't give him a chance to survive from. He is, after all, an expert marksman.
It's also very convenient that John gets picked up by the Bowery King (played by Laurence Fishburne) when he falls off the rooftop. It could very well be possible that Winston has struck a deal with the Bowery King to keep John alive while he makes it appear to the High Table that he has kept his end of the bargain.
But then again, it's also possible that John and the Bowery King will be working together to take down Winston, as we last saw in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.
What to Expect in John Wick: Chapter 4
Now that John Wick: Chapter 4 has released, viewers can expect another round of action-packed sequences with a lot of stunts and different forms of martial arts. After all, the franchise has been noted as a stuntman's movie.
The movie also takes us to Paris, Berlin, Osaka, and New York City. The new movie will introduce us to new characters that will either be John's allies or foes, which include the following actors:
- Donnie Yen (as Caine)
- Bill Skarsgård (as Marquis de Gramont)
- Hiroyuki Sanada (as Shimazu)
- Shamier Anderson (as the Tracker)
- Rina Sawayama (as Akira)
- Scott Adkins (as Killa)
- Lance Reddick (as Charon)
Does John Wick Die in John Wick: Chapter 4?
The death of John Wick will likely mean the end of the John Wick films, at least this narrative. Since the franchise is growing in new directions, it's highly possible that John Wick: Chapter 4 could be the end for the character.
And for the sake of this movie, it appears like John Wick has died at the end. But there are plenty of hints that suggest he simply faked his death.
We'd like to think, however, that John won't be killed in any of the movies. Instead, he'll quietly disappear and retire in some remote island where no one can recognize him.
As for the spinoffs, there are two projects that have been announced under the franchise: The Continental, a three-episode series that will be released on Peacock later this year. Unfortunately, this won't be a continuation of John Wick: Chapter 4 since it is set in 1970 and is Winston's origin story.
There is hope that John won't die in John Wick: Chapter 4 with the other spinoff project, Ballerina, since John has been confirmed to appear in the film. But we don't know yet whether Ballerina takes place before or after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Not to mention, a fifth John Wick film still hasn't been announced. In an interview with Total Film, Reeves said:
"You have to see how the audience responds to what we did. The only reason we've had a chance to make these movies is that people have liked what we have done. So I think we have to wait and see how the audience responds to it. Hopefully they'll like it."
Right now, we'll have to wait until after the fourth film gets released.
John Wick: Chapter 4 came out on theaters on March 24, 2023. It has a total runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes, which is longer than the previous films.
