After the release of Army of the Dead earlier this year, theories on the film circulated online that there is a time loop happening in the movie. The idea was proposed by Vanderohe when they stumbled upon bodies with similar clothing just outside the vault and this was teased by none other than the director of the film, Zack Snyder, for the upcoming sequel titled Planet of the Dead.

One of the most popular theories in Army of the Dead is the idea raised by Vanderohe, portrayed by Omari Hardwick, wherein they are just stuck in a time loop as their characters seemingly went through the heist more than once and that the bodies found outside the vault wearing things that are identical to theirs. Three guns were lined up on the wall inside the vault itself. That is surprising considering that once it closes, it could only be opened from the outside.

If this theory of Vanderohe holds water, then it seems that the team has been there for one too many times and they just respawn at some point in time. Does this mean that whatever happened could just restart all over again? Well, Zack Snyder has something to say about this in a chat he had with GamesRadar, "I'm a huge fan of this mythological understory."

Snyder added, "All your time loop fun that you can have, there's a lot of cool enhancements that are baked in now. I can't wait to make the sequel to Army of the Dead so that we can see how then all of those things manifest."

Recently, Zack Snyder revealed the title of the sequel in an exclusive interview with Inverse. The movie will be titled Planet of the Dead and the title itself seems to hint that it will follow the story where Army of the Dead ended – with Vanderohe landing on a crowded city carrying the zombie virus. Will the sequel be a worldwide zombie apocalypse?

Meanwhile, Army of Thieves will be a prequel to Army of the Dead and it will be centered around Dieter Ludwig whose love for safes has proven useful to the whole team. In the same interview with Inverse, Snyder teased the future of Dieter, “But the real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don't see him die on camera, and there's still some time left.”

Seemingly, Snyder hints that he could be in the sequel, “I won't tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let's just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there's a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”

Army of Thieves streams on Netflix on October 29, 2021.
