We’re now in the second week of the Winter 2023 season, and most of the big seasonal anime have aired their first episodes. After their premieres, it seems that Vinland Saga Season 2 and NieR: Automata Ver1.1a are the frontrunners of Winter 23 based on Reddit’s karma rankings.
On the other hand, it looks like Tokyo Revengers Season 2 has flopped with its first episode.
Spy Classroom also seems to have underperformed compared to the other Winter 23 premieres.
Vinland Saga Season 2 and Nier Automata Lead the Rankings
Coming into the season, Vinland Saga Season 2 was one of the most hyped-up shows. This makes sense given how well-received the first season was.
From the looks of it, Season 2 does not disappoint as it had the most-upvoted discussion thread on Reddit for the week.
Aside from votes, the anime also got lots of positive reactions on various social media platforms.
Coming in at second place in Reddit’s karma ranking for the week is NieR: Automata Ver1.1a.
While it is a non-sequel anime, it was also highly anticipated given the popularity of the Nier Automata game that it is based on.
Along with these two, The Witch from Mercury’s Season 1 finale also got lots of interest, though that’s still technically a Fall 2022 anime.
Another show to watch out for is Tomo-Chan Is a Girl! which got over 4,000 upvotes, indicating huge interest in the show.

Tokyo Revengers Season 2, Spy Classroom Rank Low
Tokyo Revengers Season 1 was arguably one of 2021’s biggest shows, so it was surprising to see Season 2 get basically ignored as it only got over 600 upvotes and over 100 comments.
Of course, Reddit discussion threads aren’t the only indicators of a show’s popularity. But it’s surprising that it didn’t even make the top 10 in the weekly rankings.
Spy Classroom is another anime that underperformed during its premiere.
While there was a lot of discussion about it when it was announced, it only ranked 15th in Reddit’s karma ranking list.
Take note though, these are all based on Reddit’s karma rankings (i.e., how many upvotes an anime discussion thread got) and are in no way representative of all anime viewers of the season.
Still, it’ll be interesting to see what the anime community online will consider the best anime of Winter 23 as the season progresses.
