What is Vinland Saga Season 2 About?

Vinland Saga is set in 11th-century Europe, primarily in and around England, which is controlled by Danish Viking invaders.

The story follows Thorfinn, who initially fights under the man who killed his father, Askeladd, in the hope that he has the chance one day to avenge his death.

Meanwhile, a battle for the British throne is taking place between the king’s two sons, with Askeladd backing young Danish Prince Canute.

Season 1 ends with Askeladd dying as part of Canute’s rise to becoming ruler of England. Thorfinn, denied his revenge, lashes out at the new ruler before being dragged away.

Vinland Saga season 2 will continue the manga’s story, starting with the Slave Arc.

After the events of Vinland Saga season 1, Thorfinn is sold into slavery but finds peace on a farm away from the violent battlefield.

That peace is shattered, however, by Canute. Driven mad by the ghost of his father, Canute goes on a rampage to claim both England and Denmark for himself.

It has been confirmed that Vinland Saga Season 2 will release on January 10th 2023, forming part of the Winter 2023 anime season.

Earlier in 2022, the first season’s director tweeted about an ‘unexpected situation’ believed to be linked to Vinland Saga’s potential change of studio (explained at the end of this article).

These words led lots of fans to believe, despite best efforts, the second season of Vinland Saga might have been further away.

Given the likely size of this project and, as a MAPPA production, the amount of other major works being produced by the studio (Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, and Chainsaw Man), most people expected the series to release later in 2023.

That prediction was positively smashed when, in June 2022, a season 2 event was announced, providing fans with an earlier release window.

Since then, it has been confirmed that the first episode of Vinland Saga Season 2 will premiere early in the morning on January 10th. in Japan, such times are usually presented as the night of the day before, which in this case means January 9th.

It has been revealed that Vinland Saga Season 2 will be available to watch internationally on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

The new season of Vinland Saga will be available 'sequentially' (likely to mean weekly alongside each episode's domestic release) on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. The only exceptions are in Asia, where the series will be unavailable on Crunchyroll, and China, where neither service is streaming the series.

Season 1 aired on NHK General and was streamed worldwide via Amazon Prime. However, as part of Vinland Saga Season 2's initial announcement, it revealed that the first season would arrive on more streaming platforms globally.

There was always likely to be increased demand for the second season given its success. That, coupled with a reduction of anime content on Amazon Prime, made it likely that the streaming arrangements for Vinland Saga Season 2 would change.

After months of rumours, it has now been confirmed that Vinland Saga Season 2 will be produced by MAPPA. That's a change from season 1, which was produced by Wit Studio.

Some sites reported in May that the studio change had been confirmed by director Shuuhei Yabuta and the mangaka Makoto Yukimura in a Twitter Space.

Those reports were debunked as a mistranslation, but the writing was on the wall regardless.

Since season 1 aired in 2019, many of Vinland Saga’s key staff have left Wit Studio. The director Shuuhei Yabuta and character designer Takahiko Abiru, both reprising their roles for season 2, recently worked on Attack on Titan: The Final Season – another series that swapped Wit for MAPPA.

It has been confirmed that the rest of the key staff from season 1 will also be returning for Vinland Saga Season 2.

Out of the new voice actors, some of the most notable names include Yuu Hayashi as Olmar and Shunsuke Takeuchi as Einar, whom voiced Mikey and Makoto in Tokyo Revengers respectively.
