Not to be confused with the Netflix/Guillermo del Toro's remake of the classic children's book, Disney is releasing its own Pinocchio remake too.

Yes, that's right. There are two Pinocchio movies set for a release this year. The difference between the two, apart from technology used and production, is that Guillermo del Toro's version is a darker take on the classic.

On the other hand, Disney will be releasing a live-action version of the novel, which will exclusively be available on Disney+. If you're looking forward to the latter, you'll be pleased to know that it will be released in September. When exactly? Here's all we know about the movie so far.

You don't have to wait too long for Pinocchio to be available on Disney+. In fact, you can start watching the live-action movie on September 8, 2022. This is also the Disney+ Day celebration, which Disney will celebrate with its biennial fan expo D23.

Along with its release date, Disney announced that the movie will be released on its streaming platform instead of a theatrical release. This isn't the first live-action remake that Disney decided to forgo a cinema release. Apart from Pinocchio, Disney released other live adaptations of Lady and the Tramp and Mulan on its streaming service.

Along with its first teaser, Disney revealed the official synopsis of Pinocchio as:

"Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis directs this live action retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, the wood carver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his own son. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his "conscience"; Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo is the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key is "Honest" John; Academy Award nominee Lorraine Bracco is Sofia the Seagull, a new character, and Luke Evans is The Coachman. Also in the cast are Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana (and her marionette Sabina), Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick."

It's possible that we'll see the familiar story be adapted into the film. But along with the change in animation style, we might see a few changes to the plot.

As mentioned, this isn't the only Pinocchio movie that will be released this year. Later in December, Netflix will be releasing its own Pinocchio version. This version is co-written and co-directed by Guillermo del Toro. In addition to this, that version will be a stop-motion animation. Disney+'s version, on the other hand, is a live adaptation of the novel.

Some of the actors that will be in Netflix's Pinocchio movie include Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Cate Blanchett, and John Turturro.

As for the storytelling, it looks like Disney's version is a faithful retelling of the classic animated film. Meanwhile, the Netflix version is a dark and demented adaptation of the novel.

  • Luke Evans (as The Coachman)
  • Cynthia Erivo (as The Blue Fairy)

For years, it has been rumored that Robert Downey Jr. will star in Tim Burton's Pinocchio. There's no mention of him landing a role in this film but there are rumors that he will be playing the role of Gepetto.

We'll know for sure once this is cleared up.
