Rumors of the two artists playing the main characters for this highly-anticipated adaptation have been floating for months, and both stars confirmed their castings on their Instagram accounts, according to a report by Variety.

Universal will produce Wicked and is slated to premiere in theaters in December 2024. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also directed the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In The Heights. The musical is based on L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s book The Wizard of Oz but focused on the Wicked the Witch of the West, Elphaba. Wicked was based on the novel of the same name created by Gregory Maguire. The book expanded into sequels, namely Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.

The musical adaptation of Wicked premiered at the Gershwin Theatre in New York in October 2003. The first Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway were Idina Menzel (Rent, If/Then, Frozen) and Kristin Chenoweth (You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, On the Twentieth Century Revival). Menzel won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Elphaba.

Rumors of Ariana Grande being part of the Wicked movie have already been circulated for years. She performed a pop version of Glinda’s song Popular together with singer MIKA, which was released in 2013.

Not much info has been released yet, not even a trailer. But, knowing that we finally know the two witches playing in Wicked, fans’ expectations are high, and we are hoping we get to see a glimpse of what people should expect from this movie adaptation very soon.
