The Abyss in Made in Abyss is a massive pit that has appeared in the islands of Beolusk's Southern Ocean. It is home to some of the world's most dangerous creatures and rare vegetation. Even today, the reason for its unexpected appearance is unknown.

The Abyss also has some of the world's best artifacts. This is one of the reasons why the City of the Greater Pit exists: to take advantage of the abyss's resources.

However, as much as people want to find new artifacts, creatures, and plants, the harsh and cruel environment of the abyss prevents them from doing so.

A powerful force field exists to support life in the abyss and keep its ecosystem in balance. The force field is not visible to the average person. In the anime, Nanachi, who has the ability to see the force fields and thus avoid the curse of the abyss, thoroughly explains it to Reg.

Furthermore, time appears to be different in the abyss than it is on the surface. Ozen even believes that the deeper the diver dives into the abyss, the faster time passes. Five weeks in the abyss' fifth layer equates to several months on the surface.

Some of the harmless creatures and vegetation that can be found in the first layer of the abyss are In the first layer, young cave raiders discover numerous praying skeletons as well as ordinary artifacts.

The Forest of Temptation is another name for the second layer of the abyss. The Inverted Forest is located in the second layer, where trees grow and waterfalls flow upward. An observation camp has also been constructed to aid fellow cave raiders.

The Great Fault is the third layer of the abyss. Because of the 4km vertical cliff, this is home to some of the most lethal aerial creatures in the abyss. If you are afraid of heights, you should avoid going past the second layer.

The Goblet of Giants is the fourth layer of the abyss. Because of the effect of its ascension, it is infamous among cave raiders. One can bleed to death by ascending 10 meters into the fourth layer.

The Sea of Corpses is the fifth layer of the abyss. This is the abyss's thinnest layer, which is home to the Ido Front, where the white whistle, Bondrewd, established territory. This is the final layer where humans can possibly return to the surface and bear the strains of ascension.

The Capital of the Unreturned is the sixth layer. The bravery of cave raiders who reach the sixth layer is referred to as the Last Dive. The ruins of the Golden City exist at this point of no return. The Iblu Village, which is full of narehate, or hollows, can also be found in the sixth layer.

It is still unknown what lies at the bottom of the abyss in Made in Abyss at the time of writing.

According to the manga, neither Lyza nor any white whistle has reached the bottom of the abyss.

What's more, Lyza's whereabouts remain unknown to this day. According to one of Lyza's notes, she has seen cyborgs like Reg serve as gatekeepers in the abyss's seventh layer. However, it remains unclear.

There are numerous theories about what lies at the bottom of the abyss. Some believe that there will be a portal at the bottom of the abyss through which one can be transported to another strange environment.

There's also the theory that the abyss's bottom contains scientific ruins and possibly an ancient civilization that will explain the true nature of the abyss.

Some argue that the bottom will be an ocean floor that will serve as a home for an underwater city.
