Who is Nanachi in Made in Abyss?
Nanachi is a once former human who resides in one of the poorest towns overseas. At a very young age, Nanachi aspires to see the abyss and experience it.
One day, Nanachi’s dreams come true after Bondrewd, a white whistle, visits their town and offers the children a challenge.
Nanachi agreed to go along with Bondrewd's intentions since he had aspirations of seeing the abyss. They journey into the fifth layer of the abyss with Mitty, a young girl who aspires to be a white whistle.
At first, Nanachi and Mitty optimistically believe Bondrewd’s plans. However, as time goes by, their acquaintances have gone, and they are sent to some form of experiment.
When it was their turn, Mitty and Nanachi were put in cubicles where they were told that they would be sent to the sixth layer.
Mitty is in the left cubicle, where she would be subjected to the curse's ravages, and Nanachi is in the right cubicle, where she will be moderately impacted even if Mitty dies.
Mitty became a warped hollow with no human cognition and abilities as soon as they were plucked from the sixth layer.
After becoming a hollow, Nanachi changed into a furry humanoid. They and Mitty escaped Bondrewd's land and lived in a grass-covered house at the fourth tier of the abyss.
They meet Reg and Riko, who are in distress after Riko was poisoned and suffered the abyss curse.
Is Nanachi Male or Female in Made in Abyss?
Nanachi in Made in Abyss is neither male nor female.
According to mangaka Akihito Tsukushi, Nanachi's gender is purposefully ambiguous. As a result, it's safe to assume Nanachi is a non-binary character, as the author purposefully left the gender to the fans' interpretation.
Nanachi's appearance and attitude toward her acquaintances tilt more towards the female side. Despite their aloof demeanor, Nanachi appears to care about Mitty as a sister rather than a brother.
Nanachi, on the other hand, has the spirit of a young boy who is resourceful. Despite the hard circumstances in which he lives, he is self-sufficient. Not to mention his tenacity, bravery, and dexterity.
Nanachi's gender is, at the end of the day, a minor factor. It is up to the viewers to judge whether Nanachi is male or female.
Does Nanachi Like Riko in Made in Abyss?
Nanachi has sentiments for Riko in Made in Abyss, although they are not romantic.
When the two first meet, Nanachi saves Riko from death. Nanachi looked after Riko for nearly three days, demanding nothing in return.
Riko teaches Nanachi one of her cooking recipes after she awakens from her rest. She also strokes Nanachi's fur, despite Nanachi's aversion to anything that comes near to touching when it comes to Reg.
Nanachi eventually agrees to join them as they journey into the Abyss, thanks to Riko's encouragement. After all, despite being a voyage between life and death, Nanachi's dream is to see everything the Abyss has to offer.
Is Nanachi Immune to the Curse of the Abyss?
Nanachi is not immune to the Abyss Curse. Nanachi can only perceive the flow of the curse that surrounds the Abyss as part of being hollow, despite appearing to be immune.
Nanachi can dodge it thanks to his superior tracking and stalking abilities.
Nanachi also imparted this to Reg, who seemed to be unaware of the benefits and powers of being a Narehate, or hollow.
