Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s box office record has skyrocketed out of everybody’s expectations for its first opening weekend!

As Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy swing back into their multiverse-jumping adventures, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s stellar performance reached its box office record upon its huge big screen debut.

According to BoxOfficePro, Sony’s Across the Spider-Verse earned ‘more than three times’ 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had ($35.3M).

Across the Spider-Verse was initially forecasted to earn $95M-130M, but exceeded expectations as it hit $120.5M opening at the domestic box office, while grabbing $88.1M overseas and $208.6M globally.

The PG-rated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s budget cost $100M and considering $120.5M is just its first opening weekend, the Spider-Verse sequel is in for a long haul!

This box office earning definitely succeeded Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake as the live-action earned $40.6M upon its second weekend release, which declined 57% from its debut ($95.5M).

As of writing, Across the Spider-Verse opened with $17.3M in China, $11.6M in Mexico, and $11.5M in the UK.

Considering this is a rare gem to happen especially when it comes to animation sequels, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still on track to grabbing a most impressive box office feat if this keeps up!

In fact, even David A. Gross, runner behind the movie consulting firm, Franchise Entertainment Research, even said (via Variety):

“This is an exceptionally good opening for an animation follow-up sequel. [Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse] took a well-liked superhero, gave the storytelling an original visual style and created a unique experience.”

Across the Spider-Verse features additional characters from the world of Spider Society, which include Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099), Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), Spider-Man India, Spider-Punk, and many more, which add to the hype of finally seeing the franchise collide the history of Spider-people.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse kept its promise of a more intense premise for Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy to navigate through.

While Into the Spider-Verse featured their first time jumping into the multiverse, Across the Spider-Verse explores the deeper trenches of what the ‘Spider-Verse’ beholds for the future of Miles in Earth-1610 (his universe).

Faced with a new threat, Miles Morales has to defeat The Spot in order to save his universe and other multiple universes from falling into shambles.

But this is not where it all ends — as Miles will return in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
