Jodie Whittaker Regenerates Into Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor

It is no surprise that fans are going ballistic over the big reveal: David Tennant aka the Tenth Doctor from the beloved British sci-fi series Doctor Who has made his return in The Power of the Doctor! Jodie Whittaker, the Thirteenth Doctor, had a regeneration scene at the end of the episode, causing fans to freak out and feel sentimental over the longest-running doctor in the series (for five seasons from 2005-2010). Jessica Jones star David Tennant has last appeared in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, the Day of the Doctor, alongside Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor and John Hurt’s War Doctor.

Previously, David Tennant had neither denied nor confirmed his return, with the internet shaping ‘what they want it to be’, but now that he has appeared right before Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor, fans are even more ecstatic to welcome both. Tennant is also set to return in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary, as well, along with special episodes coming sometime in fall 2023 with returning showrunner Russel T. Davies and fan-favorite characters such as Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble.

In The Power of the Doctor, Whittaker regenerates back into David Tennant, who was evidently confused himself as to why he regenerated back into an old body. Check some fan tweets below:

Normally, the doctor is set to regenerate into a ‘new’ body (aka a ‘new’ actor lined up to replace the one before them), perhaps expecting Ncuti Gatwa, only to be surprised by Tennant’s appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor. However, the Tenth Doctor’s appearance added a significant amount of lore to the Doctor Who universe, with one of them being that he has the ability to manipulate the regeneration process. This may also hint that he will be returning in upcoming future episodes sometime.

His reprising of his role unfortunately does not mean he is set to stay forever in the series, as Ncuti Gatwa is set to be in the 60th Anniversary specials’ trailer as the Fifteenth Doctor.
