Doctor Who: David Tennant Breaks Silence on Being The 14th Doctor

The Fourteenth Doctor is here and it's not Ncuti Gatwa. The new Doctor Who special The Power of the Doctor featured Jodie Whittaker regenerating as David Tennant aka the Tenth Doctor. So what is it like to be back as the Time Lord? Tennant has broken his silence and addressed his return to the series!

In The Power of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker was finally ready for the regeneration and excitedly embraced the change. But when the Time Lord realizes his new form, he is shocked to realize that he recognizes "these teeth" then drops the Tenth Doctor's trademark "What?" a few times.

It's not a huge surprise that David Tennant is back considering that Whovians already learned about his return earlier this year. Still, the Good Omens actor told BBC's Today radio show that he was initially concerned about reprising the role (via TVLine).

“I think I was worried before I got there that it might be difficult to get in the groove again,” Tennant said, adding that he found it “weirdly weirdly straight-forward.”

“There’s bit of a precedent in this show that all Doctors maybe turn up for a special now and again, but usually in cohort with the current team. So to get another run round the park was a little joy I never saw coming,” he continued.

“What a lovely, lovely thing to get to revisit something that was such a wonderful, happy, significant time in my life,” Tennant concluded. “It’s like being given the loveliest present. It’s been an absolute joy.”

Showrunner Russell T. Davies has confirmed that David Tennant is the Fourteenth Doctor and Ncuti Gatwa will be introduced as the Fifteenth Doctor. This means we'll get a lot more of those "What?"s before yet another regeneration.

Doctor Who returns in 2023.
