It's hard to believe but a major Doctor Who milestone is almost upon us. The beloved sci-fi show is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023 and Whovians are expecting a major event to happen. So could it mean that the Eleventh Doctor will return for the celebration? Matt Smith has addressed the possibility of coming back as the Time Lord.
Matt Smith took over as the Eleventh Doctor back in 2010 and stayed on as the Time Lord for three seasons. He also reprised his role in five special episodes including one where he worked with David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. So it makes sense that fans are expecting Smith to return in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary.
Smith recently spoke to CNET while promoting his new film Last Night in Soho. However, the House of the Dragon star was also asked if he was getting ready to return in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary.
Interestingly, Smith admitted that he didn't know and wasn't even aware that the 60th anniversary is coming. Still, he stated that he was excited that Russell T. Davies is taking over as the new showrunner.
"I mean, look, I'm pleased Russell's back. I think he oversaw one of the great 10 years of Doctor Who. He's a great guy, he's a brilliant writer, I think he manages to get in the cultural zeitgeist, which is what that show needs to do," Smith said. He then added that Davies' return could mean amazing things for the series.
"It's an exciting move for the show, so, I'm sure one of his scripts would be just brilliant," Smith said. He then pointed out that there hasn't been any update on the 60th anniversary special, saying "I haven't heard and no one's picked up the phone yet."
It's probably too early to expect any updates on a special event in 2023 but we're hoping that Smith gets that call soon.
Although it is still unclear if Smith will return as the Eleventh Doctor, he has been working on several projects that will soon be released. Smith is playing Loxias Crown in Morbius which premieres in January 2022 and he is set to portray Prince Dameon Targaryen in House of the Dragon next year.
Last Night in Soho is now screening in theaters. The next episode of Doctor Who Season 13, which will be the last season featuring Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall, will premiere on November 7, 2021.
