WandaVision just released on Disney Plus and is already certified fresh by critics on Rotten Tomatoes! The Marvel Studios produced television series is the first of many new exclusives coming to the Disney streaming platform.
WandaVision features the so titled characters, Wanda Maximoff (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (played by Paul Bettany), and will be exploring their character dynamics like never before.
The series will be MCU canon and the MCU. It takes place after the events of Endgame. It is the first Marvel Studio's production since Spider-Man: Far From Home came out July 2, 2019. This is actually the longest period in Marvel cinematic history without a new release, as Black Widow and The Eternals are delayed due to Covid-19. It's no wonder fans of the MCU everywhere are psyched to see WandaVision.
WandaVision is filmed sitcom-style in front of a live studio audience, with the first episode being filmed in black and white. While that might seem weird, there's actually a good reason for it.
The WandaVision plot is as follows:
"Marvel Studios' WandaVision blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems."
Many have asked, is WandaVision going to be released weekly with new episodes, or will it release Netflix style with all the episodes dropped at once? Much like The Mandalorian, Disney has opted to release the series on Disney+ in a weekly format. This means a new episode will drop for WandaVision once a week starting January 15, 2021.
The series began with a two-episode premiere on January 15 and will air a new episode every week until the show's finale on March 5, 2021. After a week's break, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will air on March 19, 2021.
Some may criticize this decision, as viewers will have to wait a whole week for new episodes. On Netflix, you can binge the entire series all at once. As a viewer of The Mandalorian on Disney+ and many Netflix originals, a weekly release schedule can actually be the better experience.
How can a weekly release be better than everything on demand? Because it is a community experience. When a show like The Mandalorian releases weekly, everyone has a chance to digest and think about the episode and discuss it with friends. It becomes a social phenomenon.
When a show like The Witcher releases all at once, a lot of the smaller details or in-between episodes get forgotten. They don't have time to make an impact or become a part of the discussion. Everyone just talks about the big overall picture or the finale.
The series will be nine episodes long. The only way to watch the series will be through a Disney+ subscription. It is not expected to release on DVD anytime soon.
WandaVision is technically 4k-ready since it is streaming through Disney, although it is not specifically labeled as such. With no expected 4k release on DVD anytime soon, your best chance for viewing in the highest quality available is to have an internet connection of 25Mbps or better.
WandaVision will have a two-episode premiere this Friday, January 15, 2021. Each episode will be a little over 30 minutes long. The series will run for 8 weeks and end on March 5, 2021. It will be followed by the release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on March 19, 2021.
The series will be rated PG, and is one of the most family-friendly ratings of any Marvel show ever produced by Marvel Studios. This is likely a push by Disney to get more Marvel content suitable for kids on their Disney+ streaming platform.
