Heartstopper’s Kit Connor Praises The Crown Star Olivia Colman: ‘Thank God We Had Olivia Colman’

There is no doubt that the Emmy-Winning actress Olivia Colman has proven herself time and time again on her versatility in her various roles. From her roles in The Crown, The Favourite, Fleabag, and Heartstopper, Colman always seizes her moments. In Alice Oseman’s adapted graphic novel, Heartstopper, she plays the mother of the popular rugby player Nick Nelson. The series depicts LGBTQ+ themes and Kit Connor highlights a great moment he shared with co-star Olivia Colman.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Connor reveals he had a short time to prepare the scene with Olivia Colman as the son and mother tandem where his character, Nick Nelson, comes out as bisexual to his mother. The actor even jokes on what to call Colman outside the set. Read his full comment below:

“The funny thing about it is we had only two days together. Because — what is it that they call her in ‘Do Revenge’? ‘Oscar winner Olivia Colman.’ So, we spent the first day doing the slightly lighter scenes. And then the second day, we did the more important scenes for Nick’s development, his sort of arc.”

Nick’s moments with his mother are arguably the most important throughout the show seeing as the character was struggling in identifying with his sexuality and feelings and being cautious around his heteronormative friends. Connor touches on managing to ‘getting it right’ with Colman’s help in making the scene a lot easier.

“That final scene in episode eight was the most important thing for me in the whole show. I was like, ‘OK, we’re going to get it right.’ We didn’t have much prep for it. But I’m so glad that I was able to do it with Oscar winner Olivia Colman because we were able to get that immediate sense of believability. Here is a son who is able to be so vulnerable and honest with his mother.”

Connor reiterates Colman's acting even more, comparing it to the idea that the scene would have been more difficult to shoot had Colman been a ‘lesser’ actor.

“Yeah, I think if she were a lesser actor, then it would have been a lot harder. But thank God we had Olivia Colman to help us through.”

Heartstopper Season 2 is still in production, but Heartstopper Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix. Meanwhile, The Crown Season 6 began filming in September 2022 but no official release date yet. All seasons of The Crown are available on Netflix.
