First, a short overview. Blue Period is a slice of life anime following Yatora Yaguchi, a high-school student. Having grown to be a people pleaser, he has good grades and is well-liked by teachers and fellow students, but he has no true passion for coursework.

Yaguchi, who used to fool around Art classes, is truly surprised when a classmate's painting stirs in him feelings he didn't know he had, inspiring him to create something of his own and join the school's art club. Soon, he finds that the art club is not enough, and he realizes that he wants to become a professional artist.

This decision renders him at odds with those around him; his parents, who think he's throwing away his chance at a more profitable career; his teachers, who had thus far liked him for his quiet, meek attitude and achievements; and his fellow artists, who have much more experience. To complicate matters even more, there's only one free art school in Japan, and it happens to be all Yaguchi can afford.

As he joins prep school to give himself the best possible chance at success, Yaguchi meets and befriends other young people like himself, each with their own story, all striving for excellence in a very competitive and at times controversial field. As he makes progress but also tastes failure, Yaguchi realizes that an artist's worst enemy isn't the ones around him, but himself.

Until very recently, the exact episode number for Blue Period had not been specified. This isn't the only way in which the show is unique. It's also one of the first shows to air weekly on Netflix, rather than be released all at once long after the series' completion on Netflix Japan. This, along with the episode delays in the West, might partly explain why the series' episode count wasn't announced for so many weeks.

Now, the episode total for Blue Period has finally been specified on MyAnimeList and it will be 12 episodes. This definitely feels short if you are enjoying the show, but it doesn't say much about the future of the series. Remember that the manga is still ongoing, so a second season might well be possible.

Meanwhile, other anime to check out this season include Takt Op. Destiny and Mieruko-chan.
