Back when the anime premiered in October, it had a small but dedicated following. Though its popularity soon exploded thanks to the events of the 2022 World Cup.

In the latest World Cup, Japan was put in the same group as powerhouses such as Germany and Spain, but against all odds, the Japanese team was one of the teams to advance.

Given Blue Lock’s story of Japan reacting to its 2018 World Cup loss, many fans drew comparisons between the anime’s story and the actual World Cup events.

Thanks to these events, the anime’s popularity skyrocketed. And now, an upcoming stage play adaptation is also coming soon.

The series’ newfound popularity is thanks in large part to the World Cup. This is a likely reason the anime is getting a stage adaptation.

After all, other popular anime like Spy x Family and Lycoris Recoil also got stage versions.

For this next one though, it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll adapt a huge game such as soccer into a small stage.

We’ll have to wait a bit longer to see what the Blue Lock stage play will actually look like, though we now have our first look at the show’s main cast.

As with other stage adaptations, the actors that were cast in this play are professional theater actors that most anime fans might not be familiar with, though it’s undeniable that they look the part.

The Blue Lock stage play will run at Sankei Hall Breeze in Osaka from May 4-7, 2023. It will then run from May 11-14, 2023, at the Tokyo Sunshine Theater.

Given its four-day schedule in each city, it might be difficult to secure tickets, even for those in Japan.

However, one of the performances might be recorded and released as a DVD, as was the case with the Lycoris Recoil play.
