The Barbie movie is one of the most highly anticipated movies to arrive in 2023 and it unveiled its star-studded cast through iconic posters that even lets you have your own Barbie or Ken look with a selfie generator. Among the characters is Emerald Fennell's Midge.

Emerald Fennell's Midge in the Barbie movie is expected to follow the origins of the doll.

She is Barbie's best friend, presumably that of Margot Robbie's, and she is pregnant. Midge is actually one of the lesser known dolls of Mattel which has a deep and controversial history.

In 1963, when Barbie was under fire for being "too sexy," Midge was released as the best friend of Barbie, designed to divert the attention on the sensuality of the infamous doll.

Midge looks more innocent with a round face and less make-up.

For the advertisements, Midge usually became the third wheel during the dates of Barbie and Ken. (Yikes!)

Midge retired in the 60s, returned in the 80s with her era appropriate looks, and got married in the 90s to Alan where Barbie became a bridesmaid.

However, Midge faced a controversy in 2002 when she got pregnant with her second child as Mattel released a pregnant Midge doll where one could pop-off her belly and find a baby inside.

This stirred a controversy that Midge promoted teen pregnancy, thus, being pulled out of the shelves.

After that, Mattel released a new version of Midge with a baby, now outside her flat belly, and a new Alan doll with a stroller. From then on, Alan was never seen again -- until the Barbie movie.

As for Midge, she reappeared on Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse in 2012.

As the Barbie movie explicitly reveals that Midge is pregnant in the film, it is a huge nod at the origins of the doll and her deep relationship with her best friend, the titular Barbie.
