Warner Bros announced the release date of the live-action Barbie movie during the 2022 CinemaCon. With Margot Robbie playing the titular role, the film will come out and hit the cinemas on July 21, 2023.

Barbie Live-Action Filming: Is Barbie finished filming?

The principal photography for Barbie live-action started in March 2022. The scenes were taken at the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. Filming for Barbie wrapped up on July 21, 2022. Some members of the cast posted photos on their Instagram profiles to celebrate the end of filming.

There have been rumors about who will play the lead role in the live-action Barbie movie. 

Margot Robbie is Barbie

Amy Schumer originally joined the project to play Barbie, but Schumer chose to opt out due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences. There have even been reports that Anne Hathaway was asked to play the part. Eventually, Margot Robbie took on the role along with being a producer through her production company, Lucky Champ.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie shared how excited she is to play Barbie:

Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie. I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted. Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.

Robbie gained much acclaim through several of her roles, including playing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, as Queen Elizabeth in Mary Queen of Scotts.

Margot Said Leaked Photos Were Mortifying

When Robbie sat down for an interview in Tonight with Jimmy Fallon, she talked about how the photos taken of her and co-star Ryan Gosling mortified her.

Margot Robbie: I can’t tell you how mortified we were by the way. We look like we’re like laughing and having fun, but dying on the inside. Dying. I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life.

Jimmy Fallon: Did you realize it was going to go everywhere all over the internet?

Margot Robbie. No! I mean I knew that we had some exteriors to shoot in LA. I knew, okay, once you were doing exteriors, you're gonna get papped. There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to stand out, because, you know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did. It was like mad. It was like hundreds of people watching.

Ryan Gosling is Ken

Ryan Gosling (The Gray Man) was set to play the Ken to Robbie's Barbie, and Gosling was the only actor that Warner Bros ever considered for the role. He is reportedly in the final negotiations for the role, so we need to wait for the final casting list of the movie to make sure.

Sometime in June 2022, Warner Bros released a first-look promotion showcasing Ryan Gosling as Ken.

In his interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gosling talked about Ken and how he is going through some things in life.

That Ken life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man’ life, I think. Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He’s going through some stuff.

More stars are joining the Barbie cast with Will Ferrell, who will play the CEO of a toy company, along with Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu (from Shang Chi), and Rhea Perlman. We can also expect to see America Ferrer, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, and Scott Evans.

In the movie, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Emma Mackey (from Sex Education), Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, and Ariana Greenblatt are also set to act. Michael Cera and Marisa Abela are also part of the cast.

Gretta Gerwig, who earned much acclaim for directing cinematic hits Lady Bird and Little Women, will be directing the film. She will also be writing the script alongside partner Noah Baumbach, the writer and director of the hit film, The Marriage Story.

Margot Robbie will be a producer of the film through her production company, LuckyChap, along with Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner from Mattel, and David Heyman from Heyday Films.

The executive producers for Barbie are Josey McNamara from LuckyChap and Ynon Kreiz from Mattel.

One of the most asked questions about the movie involves its soundtrack- will they use Aqua's "Barbie Girl?" Unfortunately, it seems that this won't be the case, maybe because of the complicated history between Mattel and the song.

Barbie Live-Action Plot: What Will Happen in the movie?

We can expect a brand new take on Barbie in this real-life feature. Greta Gerwig, the director/co-writer of this Barbie movie, has earned a reputation for creating films that inspire and empower viewers.

Traditionally, Barbie has always been viewed as a simple character, oftentimes involved in activities that society sees as 'fit' for a girl. This includes choosing careers that are labeled feminine and less technical. Over the years, Barbie has fought to reframe this mindset, teaching kids and adults all over the world that being a girl is not a disadvantage.

The lack of opportunities to build role models for modern girls was allegedly one of the reasons Schumer backed out of the film. She wanted to give Barbie more agency, but the team at that time did not see eye to eye.

Gerwig has been fighting for the same cause through her films. She creates characters who go against the flow and challenge the conventional. We can expect this iteration of Barbie to show a young woman who knows what she wants while still being true to herself.

As a toy, Barbie has been a game-changer, encouraging open-ended play that developed creativity. As a movie? Barbie may be bigger than we imagined a real, live Barbie to be.

One thing is for sure: this will not be your typical Barbie movie.
