The official synopsis of From Scratch reads:

"Inspired by the memoir, ‘From Scratch’ is a cross-cultural love story that follows Amahle "Amy" Wheeler (played by Zoe Saldaña) an American student studying abroad in Italy, as she meets and falls in love with Lino, a Sicilian chef. Their whirlwind romance faces many unforeseen challenges, including their very different cultural backgrounds; true to real life, it is also infused with lightheartedness and moments of humor that exist alongside the more serious ones. But when Lino is faced with unimaginable health challenges and the couple’s future is threatened, the two families come together to create an extended family unlike any they could have imagined, proving that love crosses all borders."

From Scratch is a beautiful story that talks about love, food, and the importance of family who sticks by your side no matter what. Oh, and expect to see a lot of delicious food in the series that will make you go hungry!

Is From Scratch a True Story?

Yes, From Scratch is based on a true story. It was written as a memoir by Tembi Locke entitled From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. The memoir was published in 2019 and quickly named as a bestseller by The New York Times.

Locke acts as the show's co-creator and executive producer. The showrunner is Tembi's sister, Attica Locke, who was present throughout Tembi's love-at-first-sight experience and heartbreak.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tembi said:

"One of the things about family and what we hoped to do as storytellers was to show the subtle complexities that are in every family. The kinds of ways that we lift each other, we fall down on each other, we get back up again, we apologize. We wanted to do that lovingly and with levity."

Attica added: "We wanted Amy and Lino to, in some ways, learn that. They [have] this kind of arc, where they're like, 'Forget those other people. It's just us, and that's what matters.' But when things get really tough, you need help. You need your family."

The show's other screenwriters are Amy Wang, JJ Braider, Joshua Allen, Jason Coffey, and Marguerite MacIntire. Nzingha Stewart and Dennie Gordon have been credited as the show's directors. Reese Witherspoon is one of the executive producers of the series.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Witherspoon said:

“Tembi’s memoir is a raw and tender exhibition of life in all its pieces. She brings you into her love, her loss and her resilience with such vulnerability and strength. We immediately fell for Attica and Tembi’s vision and feel honored to have the opportunity to help bring it to life onscreen. We could not imagine more perfect partners for this than Zoe and her sisters and 3 Arts Entertainment, along with the incredible team at Netflix.”
