During the height of the global lockdowns, Netflix released Extraction, which gave its viewers a look at Chris Hemsworth as a mercenary instead of the beloved comic book character, Thor.

Ever since the film was released, the movie racked up huge numbers and its popularity spread widely. As a result, Extraction has landed as one of Netflix's biggest films of all time. So it's only natural that the producers decided to make a sequel.

Here's what we know about Extraction 2 at this time.

So now that we know Netflix is making an Extraction 2, the big question is when it will be coming out.

Netflix confirmed the sequel in September 2021 by releasing a short teaser clip using cut footage from the first movie. The clip ends with a confirmation that a sequel is in the works. At that time, Netflix did not reveal a release date or window for Extraction 2. The film then went into production and wrapped up filming in April 2022.

In July 2022, it was reported that the film will be released sometime in 2023. This disappointed some fans who were hoping Extraction 2 would be released just before the year ends. However, a specific release date has not yet been announced. It's possible that the sequel could be released in the first part of 2023.

What Is Extraction 2 About?

Extraction is based on Ande Parks' graphic novel called Ciudad. Hemsworth stars as Tyler Rake, a former special forces operator who became a mercenary. In the first film, he was hired to save a crime lord's son who was kidnapped.

When we last saw Rake, it seemed like he would not make it. Even though he was able to complete his mission, fans were doubting whether Rake would survive after. But now that Extraction 2 has been confirmed, it's likely that Rake survived his injuries and is ready to fight back. Plus, TV and film logic always seem to point out that in the absence of a body, you should always expect the character to still be alive.

So what could the sequel be about? Unfortunately, the Extraction 2 story is still being kept under wraps.

In an interview with Collider, scriptwriter Joe Russo explained what they have planned for the sequel. For starters, Extraction 2 "has a different color schematic. It's set in a different part of the world. It has a different pace, a different tone than the first one. And that, to us, is an interesting way to approach serializing a story, is that it's more surprising and unexpected, and you're not going to get the exact same movie that you got the last time out."

Director Sam Hargrave shared some set photos on his Instagram account showing a wintery backdrop for Extraction 2. Could this be the "different part of the world" that Joe Russo mentioned?

Together with Joe Russo, his brother, Anthony, will be producing the film through AGBO production company. Hemsworth is also credited as a producer in the second movie.
