One of the questions fans have been wondering is what happened to Gamora. It can be recalled that she was killed in Avengers: Infinity War by her father Thanos, but was alive again in Avengers: Endgame (although it’s a different version of her).

However, Gamora was noticeably missing in Thor: Love and Thunder as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. From the trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we know that she's still involved in the final film of the trilogy.

So, what was Gamora’s role in Vol. 3? What happened to Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Did she join the Guardians again?

It can be recalled that Gamora was sacrificed in Avengers: Infinity War by Thanos in order to obtain the Soul Stone. In Avengers: Endgame, Gamora’s alive again, but it’s a different version of her.

In Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers travel back in time to collect the Infinity Stones in order to undo Thanos’ snap. This leads to unintended consequences in the timeline, such as a 2012 version of Loki escaping custody (thus, the Loki series) and a 2014 version of Gamora pulled out of time and traveling back to the present day.

This explains why Gamora is alive and still in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Gamora doesn’t go with the Guardians. She went out on her own, which explains her absence in Thor: Love and Thunder and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it is revealed that Gamora joined the Ravagers. The Guardians needed to go to Orgosphere to obtain Rocket’s file, and Gamora only helps them because Nebula promised her money.

So, Gamora doesn’t officially join the Guardians again, although she helps them save Rocket and defeat the High Evolutionary.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we see a meaner and tougher version of Gamora who doesn’t hesitate to shoot people. Nebula, however, says that Gamora was always mean, but people regarded her as the evil sister.

At the end of the movie, Gamora chooses not to stay in Knowhere or be with the Guardians. Gamora happily goes back to her newfound family, the Ravagers, and they accept her with open arms.

No, Gamora and Peter don't end up together in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the film, Peter is heartbroken over the loss of Gamora and ends up getting drunk every day.

In the movie, and as seen in the trailer, Gamora tells Peter that “whoever it was that you were in love with, it sounds more like her.” She then points at Nebula.

Later on, the Guardians go through space, and Peter pours out his heart to Gamora. He tells her “I miss you so much, and maybe if you open yourself up to it, there’s a possibility…” Gamora cuts him off by saying “I don’t think so, Quinn”.

While Peter is still very much in love with Gamora, the latter doesn’t even remember him. While Peter tries to convince Gamora to open herself to the possibility of a romance between them, Gamora consistently reminds him that she’s not the woman who loved him.

So, at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gamora and Peter Quill don’t end up together. Peter decides to go back to Earth to be with his family.

And as mentioned earlier, Gamora goes back to her newfound family, the Ravagers. But before going back to the Ravagers, Gamora tells Peter that she thinks he and her other version had so much fun.

The post-credits scenes for the movie suggest that there may be another Guardians film, or that the Guardians will appear in future Marvel movies. Actress Zoe Saldaña, however, says that she’s done playing Gamora. She also hopes another actress will take over.

“I think the time has come for me to step down, and for the next generation to come forward. The one thing I would not want is for Gamora to go away. She's been such an impactful character for fans and especially female fans, and young female fans,” Saldaña said in an interview with Total Film.

“I would love for Marvel to figure out a way to find that next generation of actors that can incarnate these characters, and give them this immortality that fans generationally keep coming back to… But me, per se? I mean, I signed up for one, and I got 10 years. Lucky me, man. I have no complaints. And I'm moving on,” Saldaña added.

There are no announcements yet regarding future projects involving the Guardians of the Galaxy. But even if this is the last time we see Gamora’s character, at least we know that she got the peace she wanted. She may not have joined the Guardians again, but at least she found happiness with her new family.
