Zoe Saldaña Says She Isn’t Coming Back; Wants Gamora To Be Recast

The conclusion to the epic trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is coming out next week. Even though it might be the last time that fans will see the best of the Guardians, most of them are still hoping they will pop up in other MCU movies.

However, Zoe Saldaña, who plays Gamora in the trilogy, revealed she is done playing the character and is hoping another actress will take it from here. In an interview with Total Film, the Avatar star confirmed she was ready to leave Gamora behind.

“I think the time has come for me to step down, and for the next generation to come forward. The one thing I would not want is for Gamora to go away. She's been such an impactful character for fans and especially female fans, and young female fans.” said Saldaña.

Chris Pratt, who joined Saldaña in the interview, noted that he isn’t shutting down the possibility of still playing Star-Lord in the future. Both actors affirmed that their answers aren’t hints to downplay who gets to live and die in the third film.

Pratt reasoned that even if one of the cast members dies, they can still come back, given the MCU’s multiverse and such. While Saldaña stated that future generations would want more Guardians stories, so they need to live and continue.

“I would love for Marvel to figure out a way to find that next generation of actors that can incarnate these characters, and give them this immortality that fans generationally keep coming back to,” remarked Saldaña.

She continued, “But me, per se? I mean, I signed up for one, and I got 10 years. Lucky me, man. I have no complaints. And I'm moving on.”

Saldaña isn't the first Guardian actor to bid their MCU character goodbye; Dave Bautista, who portrays Drax the Destroyer, has also said in the past that he’s done with his superhero stint. However, both actors noted that it wouldn’t be the last time they would work with James Gunn.

Gunn is behind the greatness of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and the third film will be his final contribution to the MCU, given that he is now acting as the co-CEO of the DC Studios.

Even if Vol. 3 is still days away, early reviews are in, and most of them are citing that it brought back the MCU’s glory and has ended the trilogy perfectly.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premieres in worldwide cinemas on May 5.
