The Walking Dead’s Negan Possible Good Guy Teased By Jeffrey Dean Morgan

The Big Bad for The Walking Dead's season 7 is clearly Negan. Between bashing a beloved character's skull in to potentially doing other disheartening things to our main gang, he has it out for the kill and then some.

But according to Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it can still be all a matter of perspective. Speaking to Cinema Blend, Morgan pointed out a good fact that some people may forget: we've been following Rick's group for all six seasons. The only problem with Negan is that we've seen a glimpse of him and his minions in action last season.

"I see the other side of the coin. If we followed Negan's story for the last seven years, he'd be our hero, and someone like Rick, who rips the throat out of people, would be the bad guy."

This is a good case in point, considering how Rick and the gang had become more aggressive after their encounter with cannibals at Terminus and The Governor. Of course, in a way, those encounters sort of justifies how Rick bases his decisions, particularly the one where they decide to attack first.

But Morgan gives a good example of how we can turn this thinking around. For him, Negan's actions may be justified by the fact that Rick and his group had killed more than 20 of Negan's own group. And that should hurt at the very least, even for someone who seems as psychopathic as he is.

This is an admirable way of portraying the character, and one that can make him believable to be more than just a villain. We've seen a similar justification to those in Terminus, wherein they themselves felt the hardship and abuse of others, which made them decide to become the hunters instead of the prey.

That will certainly make me believe why on earth Carl would want to be friends with him, as what happened in the comics.

I think The Walking Dead will indeed go the interesting route of putting a more human touch to an otherwise zombie apocalypse series. I'm sure there will still be walkers left and right—we all saw the official trailer—but the human drama will be quite the show for this new season.

The Walking Dead will be back on AMC on Oct. 23.
