The Last of Us has yet to officially introduce Abby in the HBO series, so it’s only natural that fans are campaigning for their ‘perfect’ candidates for the role, especially given that Abby is a pivotal character in The Last of Us Season 2. One of these candidates happens to be former Star Wars actress Gina Carano.
While it’s undeniable that Carano has a similar build that could depict the HBO version of Naughty Dog video game’s Abby, Star Wars fans are well aware of the controversy surrounding Carano’s firing, and one of those controversies involves her transphobic views. Seeing that Abby is encountering and befriending a trans character on The Last of Us Season 2, fans are not convinced Carano would be the best at play here.

Gina Carano is supposed to continue playing the role of Cara Dune in The Mandalorian Season 3 on Disney. However, the series pretty much erased her existence through a two-second explanation. It is worth mentioning that aside from Carano’s transphobic stance, she had also had other social media controversies during the pandemic, and even shared antisemitic views.
Other actresses part of the fans’ campaigning are Marvel’s Florence Pugh and Shannon Berry. The latter is seemingly the closer choice, seeing that showrunner Neil Druckmann had begun following the actress after the first episode of The Last of Us aired. While this remains to be pure speculation, The Last of Us Episode 9 had already teased that Abby may have made an appearance in the show.
Carano’s controversies keep on hindering open opportunities for her to play prominent roles, which also leads fans to realize that the actress is also incapable of ‘acting’ altogether. The Last of Us does not shy away when it comes to depicting LGBTQ+ relationships on screen, and it’s certain they wouldn’t hire an actor ruling against that, as well.
