Warning: If you haven't seen Chapter 17 of The Mandalorian, this article contains SPOILERS so read at your own risk!
Over two years after Gina Carano's controversial firing from Disney, The Mandalorian Season 3 finally revealed Cara Dune's true status in the Star Wars Universe. The first episode of the beloved spinoff series pretty much confirms that Dune still exists in the MandoVerse with Chapter 17 leaving the door wide open for her eventual return.
In the seventeenth chapter titled "The Apostate", Greef Karga, who now operates as the "High Magistrate" of Nevarro offers Din Djarin a position as the planet's Marshal. He then refuses the offer and tells Karga that he actually paid his old friend a visit in hopes of resurrecting IG-11, the droid who aided them against Moff Gideon by self-destructing in Season 1's hair-raising finale.
When Mando suggested Cara be Nevarro's enforcer instead of him, Greef revealed what she has been up to, explaining that the Marshal of the New Republic has been enlisted by the special forces after the capture of Gideon in Season 2.
The episode doesn't even bother to dive deep into Cara's whereabouts and that two-second explanation is all there is. Following the episode, fans took to social media to poke fun at the way Carano's character was (temporarily) written off. Check out some of the reactions below:

It remains unknown whether or not Lucasfilm will ever bring Cara back to the fold but we'd like to assume that she'll eventually reunite with her allies. Don't expect Carano to reprise the role though because the obvious move for Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni is to look for a new actor to play the part.
The Mandalorian Season 3's first episode is now streaming on Disney+.
