The Last of Us Episode 8 Recap

The Last of Us Episode 8, When We Are In Need, this episode proves how humans are far more dangerous than the infected and Ellie gets a firsthand experience on that as she takes matters into her own hands, literally.

It starts with the views of the place then cuts to a narration of a verse from the Bible, Revelations 21, being read by David to his people holed up at a steak house in the middle of a harsh winter, then, a girl cries, interrupting David.

David explains to her the rest of the verse and she asks when they will be able to bury her father, to which David replies that the ground is still to cold to bury someone, thus, they would just do it in spring. The meeting adjourns and David speaks with James.

David asks about the supplies they have left and that they have to keep the whole place in rations for a week or two. James opens up about a deer that the others spotted and David confronts James as he feels some doubt on the latter but they push through with the hunt.

It cuts to Ellie who is still tending to the injuries of Joel and she is getting really hungry by the looks on how she chomped down on her food but she still made sure to leave some for Joel. This made Ellie think of what's to come, thus, she tells Joel that she will be back.

Ellie gets out with her rifle and goes for some hunting. While she spotted a rabbit in a nearby forest, she couldn't lock it in and catch it, but then, Ellie sees a deer and guns it down. However, the deer runs away so Ellie follows it.

Meanwhile, David and James sees the deer when Ellie pops out of nowhere. Despite David telling Ellie that they are hungry, she couldn't pass up the chance on the deer, thus, David offers her some exchange for the deer and Ellie sets the terms: some medicine and a half of the deer.

David orders James to get some penicillin from their commune and he suggests to Ellie camping somewhere nearby while waiting for James. David tries to convince Ellie to join them but it's a classic Ellie thing to stay spunky and keep her guard up.

David, then, shares the story of their four men who went in for a run but only three came back alive. One of them was murdered by a man travelling with a girl, and Ellie knows right then and there that David and his people are where the raiders who stabbed Joel are from.

Ellie demands the medicine and runs away. David and James did not pursue her anymore and they take the deer back to their commune.

Meanwhile, the cooks of the commune are preparing their food when a man steps in to deliver some meat. The man claims that the meet is venison, a kind of deer that they thought of, then the cooks proceed to cook. While dinner is served, David and James arrive with the deer.

David reveals that they found the people who killed one of their members but the same girl interrupts him again. David slaps her and reminds the girl not to interrupt him again, as their father, and that she should have respect.

Back to Ellie and Joel, Ellie puts Joel a part of the penicillin through a syringe that despite not knowing where to administer the drug, Ellie still manages to give Joel a few shots. While feeding the horse, Ellie sees the birds flying away which gives her an idea that someone is coming.

Ellie confirms it so she runs back to Joel as quick and quiet as she can. Ellie gives Joel a knife and she tells him to kill off whoever goes near him while she drives the others away. Meanwhile, David orders that they will be taking Ellie back to their camp while some few stays to kill Joel.

Ellie rides their horse which is later shot by James. James decides that it'd be better to kill Ellie but David arrives in time to ensure that they bring the dead horse and he carries Ellie to their place.

Inside a cage, Ellie frantically wakes up and she refuses to answer any of the questions of David who asks her what her name is. David tries to convince Ellie to join them and offers her a new beginning.

As for Joel, the others are looking for him. One of the men finds his place but Joel musters the strength to kill him. Then, he takes the other guys through an interrogation as for the whereabouts of Ellie, who is in Silver Lake, then kills them both afterwards.

Meanwhile, David is still convincing Ellie to join them and he offers her food to which Ellie refuses because she sees a decapitated ear on the floor. Ellie quickly realizes that David and the others are cannibals. As David convinces her, she breaks David's finger.

Joel proceeds to Silver Lake, looking for Ellie and he sees some blood on the snow, leading to what looks like a stock room. There, he sees Ellie's bag, the dead horse, and some decapitated bodies hanging.

David comes back with James to start chopping Ellie up to pieces. This is interrupted when Ellie reveals to David that she is infected and that she bit him, thus, David's infected, too. As David rolls up her sleeve, they see her bite mark.

David is in disbelief but James believes Ellie, this interruption gives Ellie a chance to escape where she gets a cleaver and slams it on to James' neck. Ellie runs away and David follows her into the meeting room at the steak house.

Ellie throws David a firewood and throws it but misses. It lands on a curtain, setting the place on fire. David, still persistent, taunts Ellie who has a knife. Ellie charges at him, tabbing him on the side, but still gets the upper hand on Ellie, and tries to rape her.

Angered, Ellie musters up everything she has as she takes the cleaver and kills David with all her rage while the place is burning down. Ellie walks out in the cold and when Joel approaches her, Ellie frantically cries "Get off of me," before realizing that it is Joel.

Even when Joel is clueless about what happened to Ellie, he takes off his jacket and puts it on Ellie, assuring her that everything is now okay. Joel even calls her "baby girl," seemingly hinting that Joel now accepts being a father to Ellie.

There's a voiceover from Ellie, similar to the game, that after everything they had been through, there is no turning back now and they have to finish what they started because she wouldn't want all those to be for nothing. It shows a bomb going off near Ellie and Joel.

There's a scene with a pregnant woman being attacked by an infected and this is theorized to be the mother of Ellie from the time when Ellie was still in her womb.

Much of this preview is similar to that of the game, from the setting to the clothes of Ellie and Joel and as painful as the finale could end up, the TV series could still change what has already been written in the game.

In The Last of Us game, Ellie and Joel pushes through with the journey and they end up having a conversation as Joel halts and tells Ellie that they could just let the world be, giving Ellie a chance to back away from being humanity's last hope. Ellie is persistent to go through it.

The exact same dialogue of Ellie, from the game, is used in the preview, and this could lead to Ellie and Joel seeing the giraffes, an iconic scene from the game.

However, everything is not exactly as planned. While they go through a flooded place, Ellie saved Joel but to the cost of her drowning. Thereafter, the Fireflies sees them and Joel wakes up at a hospital where Marlene is waiting.

There's a catch on Ellie being the cure, though, Ellie has to die in order for them to make a vaccine. After everything that they had been through, Joel knows better not to lose another child, especially now that he treats Ellie as his daughter.

Joel goes on a quest to save Ellie but this is at the expense of everyone's hope on having a vaccine. He kills the Fireflies and drives Ellie away. When Ellie wakes up, Joel lies about everything that happened.

In a scene from the preview, Ellie is seen looking at her bite mark, seemingly wondering about something. Reminiscent of the game, this could be Ellie thinking about being the last hope of humanity to possibly feeling useless after the lie Joel told her.

As for the pregnant woman in the preview, theories suggest that she is Anna, Ellie's mother, who died on the day of giving birth to Ellie and with an infected attacking her whilst pregnant, it could be the very reason how Ellie, somehow, got a mutation and became immune to the cordyceps. Also, this is Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie in the game.

This could also be a perfect set up for the second season as it could continue the narrative of the story at par with the source material, the game, and should there be one, the events of the second part of the game is expected to be the story.
