Star Wars Teases Luke Skywalker’s Black Outfit Origin in Return of the Jedi

Characters tend to change the longer they run in a series, and sometimes one of the most distinguishing features that can indicate that change is through clothing. In Luke Skywalker’s case, he does the same thing in between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Though he was initially known for his lighter-colored clothes, he showed up at Jabba’s palace in the third film wearing all black throughout the entire film.

In fact, it was referenced in a recent issue of Marvel Comics’ Star Wars series, Star Wars #28, as a ‘clever nod to that choice in outfit.’

The Star Wars storyline features the events taking place in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi where Luke goes on an undercover mission to rescue possible informants on Coruscant. Literally. Wearing all-black outfit of an Imperial officer. A fellow Rebel pointed it out, admitting Luke looked good wearing all black, as Luke himself looked down to check out the outfit on him.

While a Jedi shouldn’t be concerned with the ensemble they put on and it’s not exactly a clear open statement on the origins of Luke Skywalker wearing black outfits later on, his positive reaction does imply that he took a conscious effort in seeing how the fit suits him.

The story continues to unfold, with the Crimson Dawn’s impact still underway in the incoming comic issues.

Star Wars: Ahsoka is expected to hit Disney+ sometime in 2023.
