Star Wars: Ewan McGregor Confirms Obi-Wan Kenobi was Originally About Ben and Luke Skywalker

One of the most intriguing things about Obi-Wan Kenobi was how it revealed that the Jedi Master had once rescued Princess Leia Organa. However, the Star Wars series had originally focused on the other twin. Ewan McGregor has just confirmed that the Disney+ show was supposed to follow Ben and Luke Skywalker on an adventure before the idea was scrapped.

Ewan McGregor was recently in attendance at Fan Expo Boston where he discussed Obi-Wan Kenobi (via Comicbook.com). During the event, the Birds of Prey star confirmed that the series was originally set to give Luke Skywalker a bigger role with major interactions with Ben Kenobi.

"It was going to be a story about me and Luke," McGregor said. "It was always going to be that, and that was one of the genius moments where everyone went, 'Wait a minute,' and then changed it."

He continued to point out that he welcomed the change since putting Leia in the spotlight was something people did not expect in the Star Wars show.

"That's the beautiful thing about how passionate Disney, Lucasfilm, all of us are, who are involved with it is from the beginning is we try really hard not to let anything of the bad just to protect your experience of seeing it for the first time," McGregor said.

"I think it's really cool that Disney and Lucasfilm care so much for the fan experience," he continued. "They really want you to have a 100% experience the first time you see it, and if you've read that, and that leaked, and this came out, it's just a bit of a shame isn't it? It's like looking at your Christmas presents before Christmas Day."

People were initially thrilled when it was officially announced that Grant Feely will play Luke Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi since it suggested that the character will have a major role in the series. In contrast, the casting of Leia actress Vivien Lyra Blair was never confirmed, making it seem like she would only appear in a cameo.

All episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are now streaming on Disney+. Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 has not yet been officially announced.
