- Primary Subject: Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie development status.
- Key Update: The movie is officially put "on ice."

- Quick Answer: Taika Waititi confirmed his planned Star Wars film is on hold ("iced") while he focuses on other film projects, leaving its future uncertain.
Taika Waititi recently revealed that his planned Star Wars movie is currently on hold and won't be in active development anytime soon.
In the last several years, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has been working on a new original Star Wars movie that he would be helming. However, to this day, it has not moved past development, and fans are wondering whether it will still happen or if it's another project in the franchise that will end up being canceled.
Is Taika Waititi's Star Wars Movie Still Happening?

In a recent interview with Inverse, Taika Waititi addressed the current status of his Star Wars movie that has been in development over the last several years.
He confirmed the project is currently "on ice," and he won't be working on it again anytime soon, as he is currently busy with other projects that he is also overseeing.
"I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice, and we’re working on a different thing together," the Oscar winner said.
Waititi's publicist reportedly reminded him not to address the project anymore for the rest of the conversation.
He added, "Well, there’s your answer. I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague. It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do. Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?"
With this new update, it suggests that Waititi's Star Wars movie project is now more unlikely to happen, given that it's no longer a priority for both Lucasfilm and the filmmaker himself. It won't be the first time a planned project in the franchise has been canned after years of development.
While it would still be great to see Waititi's sensibility make its way to the galaxy far, far away on the big screen, the possibility has become close to zero, and it won't be surprising if it is forgotten in the years to come as other Star Wars movie projects become more of a reality.
What's Next for the Star Wars Franchise

Up next in the theatrical Star Wars slate is Star Wars: Starfighter, a standalone original story that takes place in a timeline never explored in the franchise before. Shawn Levy directed the film, and it is slated for release in theaters on May 28, 2027.
The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.
Lucasfilm is also developing other Star Wars movie projects such as the Jon Watts-directed new Skywalker Trilogy movie, an untitled James Mangold movie, and a Lando Calrissian movie.
Meanwhile, on the television side, Ahsoka's second season is currently in post-production, with the premiere set for January 20, 2027 on Disney+.
