Squid Game creator Hwang Dong Hyuk gave a major Squid Game Season 2 update, revealing his progress on the second outing’s production and theme.

Though Hwang Dong-hyuk gave a brief and vague statement, it seems to be enough to excite the awaiting fans. So, are the viewers ready for Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the Front Man’s (Lee Byung-hun) return?

Hwang Dong-hyuk Talks about Squid Game Season 2

The first season of Squid Game dropped in 2021 and took the world by storm. It eventually became one of Netflix’s most popular series, making history after nabbing a whopping 14 Emmy nominations.

In an interview with E! News, Hwang Dong Hyuk revealed that though he was sick to answer questions about Squid Game Season 2, he had no choice but to give some updates about the show.

“​​I have a set outline. I have a treatment of a whole season two episode with new games and new characters,” he told E! “I like it. I think it's good. It's better than what I expected.”

So far, the creator is yet to reveal the second season’s plot details, but the new games and characters are maybe enough to hint that fans are up for another intense set of challenges.

Squid Game Season 2 Cast

Though Hwang Dong Hyuk’s words about Squid Game Season 2 are pretty vague, he previously revealed that the new season would have similar themes.

He also confirmed the return of Gi Hun in the second season and Front Man. However, there are theories Ali (Anupam Tripathi) will also make a comeback after allegedly surviving his death in the first season, per Screen Rant.

Given that most of the first season’s major characters died on screen, fans may see a lot of new faces in Squid Game Season 2.

The Confirmation of Squid Game Season 2’s Coming

Netflix officially confirmed the coming of Squid Game Season 2 in June after announcing its renewal, per Soompi.

It then dropped a new teaser for the second season, featuring the show’s famous game, “Red Light, Green Light,” on its social media pages.

“Red light… GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!” it captions its post.

The teaser also featured the motion-sensing doll Younghee, along with a special message from Hwang Dong Hyuk himself.

In his lengthy note, he confirmed the return of Lee Jung Jae and Lee Byung Hun to reprise their roles in Squid Game Season 2. He also teased that Gong Yoo would be returning.

His message reads,

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

He continues,

“And now, Gi Hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Younghee’s boyfriend, Cheolsu. Join us once more for a whole new round.”
