Requiem of the Rose King Episode 3 is upon us and, while I'm unapologetically loving the Shakespearean shojo vibes, a few explanations as to what is happening would greatly help. The show will definitely need some more time to prove itself. Thankfully, at 24 episodes, it has plenty.
Below, you will find everything you need to know about the new J. C. Staff project, including the release date and time of Episode 3, where to watch, and everything else you need to know about Requiem of the Rose King!
Requiem of the Rose King Episode 2 Recap
Based on a supernatural manga by Kanno Aya, Requiem of the Rose King unfolds in the backdrop of the War of Roses. While it is primarily a work of fiction, the manga and anime draw on historical themes, including the struggle for the English throne.
Rather than deformed, as in other versions, Richard Plantagenet is intersex here. While he identifies as male, those around him refuse to see him as a man. Richard is treated by his mother as a cursed demon and grows to only believe in his ability to fight and kill. His only solace is his loving relationship with his father, the Duke of York.
Richard is plagued by visions of Joan of Arc, who tells him he'll bring ruin to everyone around him - and given that Richard III met a tragic ending, you can just about believe her.
In episode 2, Richard was nothing more than to accompany his father at war. To their surprise, Richard’s mother begs her husband to leave Richard with her. Predictably, this was nothing but a vicious trick to keep Richard and his father apart.
Richard’s father marched against queen Margaret but he’s injured and captured, with Margaret telling him that his favorite son is dead.
In truth, Richard is forced by his mother to remain in the tower where his family keeps noble prisoners. For her part, she runs away with Richard’s brother once things start to look grim. When an opportunity to escape presents itself, Richard grabs it with both hands and undertakes a perilous journey to find his father. After many misadventures and a fateful encounter with Henry – who is revealed to have ceded the throne to Richard, Duke of York, to avoid bloodshed – Richard finally reaches his father.
What initially appears to be an emotional reunion, however, is soon suggested to be something more sinister. Richard has been known to have visions, so his father’s words could have been a hallucination. A shadowy visual reveals the silhouettes of the two men, but while Richard’s full body is visible, we only glimpse his father’s head, suggesting he’s already been beheaded.
Requiem of the Rose King is based on a successful manga which should be enough of a promise. The anime does a number of interesting things, but pacing is apparently not its strongest element. While 24 episodes seem like plenty of time, the first two are quite rushed, with the historical events being almost too convoluted to pay attention to.
Personally, I’m here for the vibes, but those not familiar with the time period and historical events might want to check out a manga – it isn’t a paragon of historical accuracy either, but it’ll help you understand what’s going on.
