Oshi no Ko has quickly become the breakout hit of the Spring 2023 season following its incredible first episode. And aside from the anime, the Oshi no Ko opening song has also become a huge hit as it has topped the charts in Japan.

Following the release of the opening song Idol by YOASOBI, the song has reached the top spot of Japan’s Spotify and YouTube charts.

This not only makes it the most-listened-to anime song of the season so far, but it is also on track to be one of YOASOBI’s biggest songs.

Shortly after the first Oshi no Ko episode’s release, YOASOBI uploaded an official music video for the song Idol on YouTube.

Given the hype for the first episode, the video quickly racked up millions of views.

The music video also nabbed the top spot in Japan’s YouTube charts with over 16 million views last week from the country.

Aside from trending in Japan, it was also a huge hit worldwide as the video was included in YouTube’s Top 100 Global music videos list.

Plus, the music video has over 40 million views already in less than two weeks.

What makes the music video special is that it is not just an extended version of the anime’s opening.

Instead, it features brand-new animated sequences that are made specifically for the video.

As expected, Ai Hoshino is the star of the music video. But what’s interesting about it is that it’s inspired by a short story written by Oshi no Ko co-creator, Aka Akasaka.

While the video continues to get plays on YouTube, it has also become a massive hit on streaming platforms.

Specifically, the song is currently at the top spot in Japan’s Spotify chart with 600,000 plays.

As of this article’s writing, the song has now racked up over 17 million plays on the platform globally.

Given that it hasn’t even been two weeks since the opening was released, the song is on track to become one of YOASOBI’s biggest songs ever in terms of plays on YouTube and Spotify.

What makes this even more impressive is that YOASOBI is one of Japan’s biggest music groups with a discography that’s filled with huge hits such as the Beastars Season 2 and Witch from Mercury Season 1 openings.

You’ll be able to hear the opening song once again when Oshi no Ko Episode 3 is released tomorrow.
