One Piece has over 100 volumes, making it one of the longest-running shonen manga in history. But in a recent interview, series creator Eiichiro Oda revealed that he did not intend the manga to get this long.
Recently, a joint interview between Oda and Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama was released on Weekly Shonen Jump and Weekly Shonen Magazine.
There, they talked about lots of interesting things, including how both series have now reached over 100 volumes.
When asked about what the secret is to reaching 100 volumes without taking many breaks in between, Oda and Aoyama did not share any specific things. Aoyama even mentioned that he is asked that often, but he had no secret to it as he just keeps working.
Oda echoed Aoyama’s answer, and he said that he did not intend for One Piece to get over 100 volumes.
He further explained that he “always wanted to end the series” but he still hasn’t done so as “there's so much [he] still wants to or needs to draw.”
In the interview, Oda also said that he still enjoys drawing and writing the series, especially when the story entered the Grand Line.
He specifically mentioned how he loves creating the different islands, kingdoms, and cultures within the Grand Line.

Aside from sharing his thoughts on the series’ length, Oda also shared that his plan is to end One Piece in 3 years’ time. Of course, this isn’t a guarantee as Oda said that it might take longer depending on how the story develops.
Recently, celebrated its 25th anniversary. During the celebration, a new trailer for the upcoming movie One Piece Film: Red was released.
