AnimeJapan 2023 had a lot of exciting anime announcements that many fans were excited about. Though there were others that caught many by surprise, including the reveal of a new Horimiya anime that’s coming this July.

During AnimeJapan’s Horimiya stage event, it was revealed that a new anime entry is in the works, which will be released sooner than expected.

This comes as a surprise, especially considering that the first season had a definitive ending.

Though when the new anime’s story was revealed, the new project did make a lot of sense.

Romantic comedy is easily one of the most popular anime genres as you can count on a new rom-com to be released every season.

Just this season, there are popular rom-com anime like Tomo-chan Is a Girl! as well as Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible.

Back in the Winter 2021 season, CloverWorks released Horimiya, a slice-of-life rom-com that got a lot of attention for its loveable cast and comfy vibe.

The anime was based on the manga of the same name that was serialized in Square Enix’s GFantasy Comics.

The Horimiya manga ran from October 2011 to March 2021, and while it may have been serialized for nearly a decade, it only had 16 volumes worth of chapters given its 4-panel manga format.

Because of this, the anime adaptation was able to completely cover the story in just 13 episodes, giving the series a satisfying conclusion. The same can’t be said for many other rom-com shows that don’t reach an ending.

Because the anime had an ending, many fans were unsure if Horimiya will ever get another anime.

So, it was a pleasant surprise that a new anime was announced recently.

Titled Horimiya -piece-, this new show will not be an anime-original sequel.

Instead, it will adapt several stories from the manga that were skipped over during the first season.

The series was announced via a preview trailer as well as a key visual featuring Hori and Miyamura. Check them out here:

Horimiya -piece- will feature the return of its voice cast, including Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna in Sword Art Online) as Kyouko Hori, and Koki Uchiyama (Toge in Jujutsu Kaisen) as Izumi Miyamura.

This new Horimiya anime will premiere in July 2023, meaning it will be one of the highlights of the Summer 23 season.
