The 12 Best Anime from Studio CloverWorks, Ranked

Spy x Family hardly needs an introduction. Despite being the most recent in this list, the comedy show managed to climb the anime ranks quickly and establish itself as not only the best CloverWorks anime, but also the best anime of Summer 2022.

Still undecided? Spy x Family follows a spy who has to devise an extraordinary plan to investigate a very secretive opponent.

As the person in question is a father, the spy adopts the persona of Loid Forger, marries a woman named Yor, and adopts Anya, a young girl whom he enrolls in the same school as his target’s child.

Unbeknownst to Loid, his new wife is an assassin. To complicate matters even further, Anya turns out to be a mind reader who knows the identity of both her parents but chooses to keep matters to avoid ending up alone again.

A lot of the CloverWorks anime are nice-looking and wholesome, but if dystopian anime are more of your cup of tea, The Promised Neverland is a great anime to watch.

The Promised Neverland focuses on a group of orphan children who come up with a master plan to escape their orphanage after discovering the sinister secret her foster mother had been hiding from them.

Outsmarting her proves to be an almost impossible feat but the world outside the orphanage promised to be even more deadly.

The show features an amazing friendship between the main character Emma and two of the boys she grew up with as well as clever mind games and one of the best-written anime villains.

Following the first season, we recommend moving forward with The Promised Neverland manga, as The Promised Neverland Season 2 was a disappointment we tend not to talk about.

Saekano the Movie: Finale finishes something that didn’t start with CloverWorks but this isn’t to say that CloverWorks didn’t do a great job with it.

Most of us are familiar with visual novels – anime-style, story-based video games which often involve choosing between several romanceable characters. But what happens when a visual novel creator’s life becomes a bit too similar to his work in progress?

The final Saekano movie aims to answer this question as the main character Tomoya prepares to choose his final route, both in-game and in real life.

My Dress-Up Darling preceded Spy x Family by a season, but it definitely helped CloverWorks dominate the anime scene for the first half of 2022.

In this seinen anime, we follow Wakana Gojou a high-school student who is serious about his interest in doll crafting. However, he makes sure to keep his favorite pastime a secret as he’s afraid that he would be bullied if his classmates found out.

His life changes when he meets Marin Kitagawa, a beautiful aspiring cosplayer who is unable to sew, so she decides to enlist his help!

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai might have a concerning title, but it’s an interesting supernatural anime with school elements.

In a world where the so-called Puberty Syndrome is a bit of a legend, Sakuta Azusagawa meets Mai Sakurajima who gained fame as a child actress. When he finds her at school, he’s shocked to find that he’s the only person who can actually see her – she’s invisible to everyone else.

From there on, Sakuta helps Mai and other girls with the same predicament. Having a male hero solving girls’ problems from them is definitely not ideal, but the anime gets points for the concept.

Horimiya is a great romance anime with relatable characters and a sweet story.

In it, we meet Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura, two high school students who don’t seem to have a lot in common. Hori is a friendly, smart girl, while Miyamura appears meek and a bit aloof.

After a fateful encounter, the two realize that their school personas are different from their true selves, and they start spending more time together.

As they get to know each other better in Hori’s house, they realize they might not be so different after all.

At this point, the Fate franchise is a bit chaotic, and newcomers might find it quite confusing. Studio CloverWorks fans might agree that Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia is some of the best Fate has to offer.

If Babylon always interested you, this might be worth giving a try! This time, the characters navigate B.C. 2655 Mesopotamia. The war is raging on and Gilgamesh must take unprecedented measures to keep Uruk safe.

Akebi’s Sailor Uniform is a sweet slice-of-life anime with cute character designs and a relaxing, nostalgic atmosphere.

Main character Akebi has always loved sailor uniforms and when she succeeds in getting into the prestigious school her mother attended, she finally gets the uniform of her dreams.

To her surprise, her new school no longer uses sailor uniforms, causing her to stand out. Akebi nevertheless manages to gain permission to keep wearing her own uniform and she goes on to make new friends and embark on cute adventures with them.

Shadows House is CloverWorks’ most gothic addition. In this fantasy anime, Emilyko, a young girl who serves in the mysterious Shadows House as a Living Doll.

All the residents of the house are Shadows - human-shaped but completely dark and featureless - each of whom is attended by a human with the exact same shape.

Young Shadow children and their living dolls are kept in their own rooms, separate from the adults until Shadow master and living doll can prove or fake compatibility and coordination - or die trying.

But Emilyko and her mistress Kate are different; they don’t want to assimilate with the other residents of the house – nor with one another. In a vein similar to The Promised Neverland, the pair tries their best to survive along with their friends, as they uncover their world’s dark secrets.

Wonder Egg Priority might not have Shadow House’s gothic aesthetics, but it might still be the darkest CloverWorks anime to this day.

Ai Ooto is a middle school student who refused to leave the house following the death of her friend, Koito. When she purchases eggs from a mysterious supernatural entity, however, she finds a new reason to live.

Using the wonder eggs, Ai and her friends are transported into a horrifying world where they fight monsters that are essentially exaggerated versions of the horrors that led other teenagers to suicide. The girls must defeat the monster to hopefully give these people a new chance at life.

At its heart, Wonder Egg Priority is a hopeful story that recognizes the need for compassion and education on mental illness, but it’s also a wild, emotional ride that deals with difficult topics and will likely shock you more than once.

The ending of Wonder Egg Priority proves a bit too confusing, but overall, this is a bold anime unlike any other.

Fairy Tail is a massive series based on an award-winning manga. Other studios including A-1 Pictures and Bridge have collaborated with CloverWorks to create a worthwhile conclusion to the beloved series.

In the third and final Fairy Tail season, Natsu Dragneel along with his companions Happy and Lucy try to reunite their guild as they brace themselves for their greatest challenges yet.

While not the most highly rated, this adaptation, it’s definitely worth watching for long-time fans of the Fairy Tail manga and anime.

The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED isn’t the highest rating nor the most well-known of CloverWorks shows. But of the fans who found out about it anyway, some will tell you it’s a hidden gem.

The show follows a detective pair; wealthy Daisuke Kanbe, and Haru Katou, who cares about justice first and foremost.

The two have a rocky professional relationship as Haru disapproves of Daisuke’s use of money to solve cases, and they can never seem to agree on the best method to use.

Ultimately, though, both their skills end up being useful, with their opposed worldviews actually making them well-suited to solve crimes together!
