Moon Knight Episode 5: What is the Realm of the Duat?

In ancient Egyptian mythology, the realm of the Duat is the place of the dead believed to be ruled by Osiris, the Egyptian ruler of the underworld. Such place is where the souls will face their judgment on whether they would go to heaven or hell. A soul would have to undergo several challenges facing demons and the would be measured by the scales of justice and one has to balance it with the feather of truth.

Staying true to the lore is Moon Knight where Episode 5, Asylum, depicted the realm of the Duat as the journey to the Field of Reeds and whether Marc and Steven would be able to enter it. The Field of Reeds is similar to heaven if taken into that perspective. This proves that Harrow really killed Marc/ Steven by putting two bullets in the chest and they are journeying to the life beyond.

Marc and Steven, along with Taweret, is aboard a ship that sails through an endless desert filled with the unbalanced souls. In the Egyptian lore, the dead goes on a journey with the ferryman who would bring the souls to the underworld.

Taweret is their guide, much like in the Egyptian myths, she is one who purifies and cleanses the souls of the dead for their safe passage into the afterlife. For Marc and Steven, she puts their hearts into the scales and made them revisit the truths that they are hiding. In the end, Steven falls into the Duat and gets frozen in sand but that gave Marc his pass to the Field of Reeds.

Moon Knight Episode 5 perfectly captured what comes after the death of a person based on Egyptian beliefs. It encapsulated the story told for more than a thousand years that the dead would enter into a journey of judgment before reaching either heaven or hell. The series stands out for its accuracy in forming a narrative close to its basis.

Moon Knight Episode 5 is now streaming on Disney Plus.
