A recent rumor has suggested that Marvel Studios was planning to bring back Robert Downey Jr. in the Deadpool and Wolverine post-credits scene before the plans fell through.

The upcoming MCU film is set to feature a variety of cameo appearances mostly from the original X-Men actors. Fans have been speculating which actors might show up and join the titular heroes in their multiversal adventure.

As usual, Marvel Studios remains mum on the details regarding the surprise cameos, but Kevin Feige recently teased that there might be more MCU crossovers aside from the TVA in Loki.

Deadpool and Wolverine Reportedly Planned to Bring Back Robert Downey Jr. for Post-Credits Scene Cameo

According to a scoop from notable insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios wanted Downey to make a post-credits scene cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine, but it didn't work out.

The Tony Stark actor's cameo would have served as a buildup to Avengers: Secret Wars and a payoff to a certain moment that happened during the film.

So far, Marvel Studios has not confirmed the claims that were made in the scoop.

Recently, Downey admitted that he is interested in making his MCU return despite his iconic character's infamous death in Endgame.

"It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea," he said in an interview.

However, it looks like a Deadpool and Wolverine cameo won't be the avenue for Downey's potential MCU return and he might be more interested in doing a comeback in an Avengers movie which is why he may have declined the opportunity to appear in the upcoming film.

While it might be disappointing to hear that Downey declined to appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, it's not surprising to see him make the decision and it's interesting to see now who might have taken over the spot in the alleged post-credits scene cameo.

For now, let's wait and see what kinds of surprises the film has in store as it is pretty clear that there are big names that they're hiding from fans.

Deadpool and Wolverine is set to arrive in theaters this July 26.
