Robert Downey Jr. recently admitted that he's been "surprisingly open" with the idea of making his MCU return and reprising his iconic role of Tony Stark.

As we're getting closer to the release of Avengers: Secret Wars, fans have been speculating whether the Oscar winner will have his grand comeback in the upcoming MCU film to don the Iron Man suit again one last time.

So far, Marvel Studios has confirmed any plans to bring back Downey in the MCU, but Kevin Feige has insisted that Tony Stark's iconic death scene in Avengers: Endgame will remain permanent.

In a recent conversation with Jodie Foster, Downey opened up about his potential return as Tony Stark when he was asked whether he is open to don the suit again.

He revealed that he has been "surprisingly open-minded" with the idea since it's the character that most matches his personalies his personality.ty.

"It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea," the Oscar winner said.

"Between Nyad and [Night Country] and, for me, Oppenheimer and then Sympathizer, it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: 'Do we still look kind of OK?' I’m like, 'We look pretty good.'"

There's no doubt that a lot of fans would love to see Downey return as Tony Stark and his official return will cause a celebration since his presence in the MCU has been greatly missed.

However, his potential comeback also poses the question of whether he will play the Earth-616 variant (which may ruin his iconic Endgame death) or a different variant from another universe.

There is a lot of creative risk in bringing back Downey in the MCU given the complexity of his legacy in the franchise, but for now, let's wait and see whether it will become a reality soon.
