  • Quick Answer: Filming starts this fall for an original anthology series that explores new stories and characters rather than directly adapting specific plotlines from the existing games.

About half a year after the Far Cry TV adaptation was officially announced and following years of speculation, the highly anticipated live-action series has finally received a major update.

The iconic Ubisoft franchise has been adapted into different live-action formats in the past, from a movie to a web series.

As this will be the first time it will be brought to the small screen, will fans see it sooner than expected?

The Far Cry TV adaptation is finally taking shape on FX after Rob Mac, who co-created the live-action series with Noah Hawley, revealed that production is set to begin later this year.

“We are starting to shoot in the fall,” he told Collider.

He also had nothing but praise for his co-creator, calling him a “genius” and one of the best collaborators he has ever worked with.

“We created the show together. We broke the first episode. And usually, when you break an episode and then a writer goes off to write it, you go through it with a fine-tooth comb. It’s often about 50% of what you discussed, with 30% being really great, and the rest needing work,” he explained. “But this was 30% of what we talked about and somehow 150% better. Every script he’s written has just leveled up.”

With production set to begin soon, the new series is finally gaining real momentum toward bringing Far Cry to the small screen.

Just like the game–known for its open-world chaos, explosive villains, and morally complex storytelling–the Far Cry TV adaptation will follow an anthology approach, with each season of the limited series featuring a new setting and cast of characters.

However, in an interview with Deadline, Noah Hawley revealed that the show will not be a direct adaptation of the video games.

“I’m not specifically adapting any of the games that they’ve put out. I’m approaching it much as I did with the Coens or X-Men (Legion) or Alien, saying, ‘Let me have a dialogue with this franchise, because this is what I think a Far Cry story is,’” he said. “We can have a larger conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of adapting video games, especially since games are built in a way that doesn’t always translate into the best drama.”

However, he teased that the series could take inspiration from Fargo, which Hawley also created, with each season telling a different story.

“We could build an anthology game adaptation where each season is a different story about civilized people thrown into situations where they have to become increasingly uncivilized,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rob McElhenney, who will also star in the series, described the live-action adaptation as “a love letter to the game” that both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy.

“It’s going to be grueling and brutal, and also a beautiful love story,” he teased.

With TV adaptations of beloved video games like The Last of Us and Fallout gaining momentum, it’s not far-fetched to think the Far Cry TV show could become a hit as well.
