The first season finale of Widow's Bay ended with a shocking twist surrounding the truth on the Warren bloodline, and as it turns out, lifting the curse won't be as easy as we thought it was.

Tom found Ruth going about her day at home, where they talked about their lives and the hardships of growing up on the isolated island. Seizing the opportunity, Tom secretly laced her tea with a lethal overdose of her own prescription medications.

However, as the poison took hold, a dying Ruth dropped a devastating bombshell: she was the biological mother of Tom’s late wife, Lauren, meaning Evan (not Ruth) was actually the final living descendant of Richard Warren. Realizing his fatal mistake could not break the island's curse, Tom desperately tried to save her, but Bechir arrived and shot her, having learned of the plan from Patricia.

Meanwhile, terrifying secrets came to light across the island. At the local shelter, Dale, a mayor's office employee, uncovered damning evidence that the town had secretly maintained Warren’s ancient covenant for generations by sacrificing citizens every time the church bell tolled. Around the same time, Bechir learned that Chelle had gone into labor.

Evan and his friends explored the dark tunnels beneath the shelter and discovered the hidden sacrificial chamber. When Ken, the custodian from the mayor's office, discovered the teenagers in the tunnels, they panicked and locked him inside the chamber. Ken was violently dragged through the cellar doors by the entity lurking beneath the island, which fulfilled the covenant and caused the raging storm to instantly subside.

However, the peace was short-lived. The following day, the silence was shattered as the church bell tolled eight times, signaling that the entity now demanded eight new sacrifices.

Fortunately, Apple TV has already renewed Widow's Bay for a second season, so you can expect more mystery on the titular island, and the cliffhanger will be addressed when it returns.

In an interview with Collider, showrunner Katie Dippold teased that they have already figured out most of the story and she already knows how they would end the story of the Loftis family.

"I have a good sense of Season 2, in the sense of how I want it to feel, the kinds of stuff we can do, and more of the lore to show. I’ve always had an idea for how I think Loftis’ story should end. Whether that’s what we end up doing or not, I’m not sure, but there’s something I’ve always had in mind," she said.

She also hinted that the second season will likely feature more flashbacks about the island, similar to the first season.

"I think it’d be fun to do more flashbacks. What I think could be very fun about this show and that I always had in mind was, if you build this world and people like being in this world, then aside from this story, there could be future miniseries," she said.

"What happened at the inn over that New Year’s night could be a standalone six-episode season. I think there is all sorts of stuff you can do, as long as this world is established. I think there’s a lot of fun to be had."

So far, Apple TV has not set a release window yet for the second season of Widow's Bay.
