Ahead of the second episode’s release, a new interview featuring the two main stars of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku was released. There, Hell’s Paradise VA Yumiri Hanamori shared the biggest challenges of voicing Sagiri in the series.

In the interview with Febri, Hanamori explained her approach to voicing the serious Sagiri as it is quite different from her typical roles.

After all, Hanamori is perhaps best known for voicing more girly and cutesy characters.

Yumiri Hanamori is a well-known and prolific voice actress who has played various roles in anime throughout the years.

One of her most well-known roles is Nadeshiko Kagamihara, the protagonist of the comfy slice-of-life anime Yuru Camp.

Nadeshiko is a cheerful and energetic character and was voiced in a higher pitch by Hanamori to match.

Along with Yuru Camp, Hanamori also voiced Haruka Itsumura in Re:Stage!, which is a school idol anime. Again, Haruka is a cutesy and girly character.

Another popular character by Hanamori is Ai Hayasaka, the ever-dependable maid of Kaguya Shinomiya in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.

While Hayasaka is a more serious character, she still has her girly moments in the series.

Then we have Sagiri, one of the main characters of Hell’s Paradise. As an executioner, Sagiri is a stern character with a serious demeanor.

It’s fair to say that Hanamori’s most recent role as Sagiri is quite different from her other popular roles.

Hanamori Explains the Challenge of Voicing a Serious Adult Woman in Sagiri

According to Hanamori, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon is a serious adult woman, and her approach to voicing the character reflects that.

But there’s more to Sagiri than simply being serious though, as she also has a compassionate side to her.

Hanamori discovered this while recording as the director of the series gave her specific directions to show certain emotions in some scenes. This depth of Sagiri’s character then is quite a challenge to portray.

To properly portray Sagiri and show the nuances of her character more clearly, Hanamori voiced her with a tone that’s between a girl and a serious woman.

This makes sense as a cutesy voice won’t fit an executioner, though a voice that’s too serious might hide the complexities of the character.

New episodes of Hell’s Paradise are released every week on Crunchyroll in the US and most of the world.

Meanwhile, countries in the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) can watch the series on Netflix.
