When it was announced that Good Omens would be getting a second season, there were questions as to what Good Omens Season 2 will be based on.

Good Omens was intended to be a limited series, with the first season already covering the entire story of Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett’s novel.

However, due to the success of the Amazon series, we get to see Aziraphale and Crowley once again in a brand-new adventure.

So, what is Good Omens Season 2 based on?

Good Omens Season 2 is an entirely new story that goes beyond what was written in the book. An official description says that Good Omens Season 2 “explores storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley.”

Gaiman and Pratchett plotted out a sequel to Good Omens which had a working title “668 – The Neighbour of the Beast”.

However, this planned sequel is not what Season 2 is based on, with Gaiman revealing on Twitter that the sequel plotted "will be Season 3 if we get there.”

So, Good Omens Season 2 is a brand-new story. It also serves as a bridge to the plotted sequel, which is what Good Omens Season 3 would be based on.

Additionally, in an interview with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar), Gaiman said:

"Because the hypothetical season three exists, there is a story that is there, and I didn’t feel that we could drive straight from season one into that."

What is Good Omens Season 2 About?

Based on the trailer for Good Omens Season 2, we know that the archangel Gabriel disappeared and that Heaven is looking for him.

It turns out, Gabriel went down to Earth to Aziraphale’s bookshop with no memories of anything. He only knows that he needs to be near the angel who’s now considered a traitor to Heaven.

In a Season 2 sneak peek, Gabriel tells Aziraphale that he just felt that as long as he came to him, something terrible might not happen.

Gabriel adds that this “something terrible” is incredibly awful, which was why he had to come to Aziraphale to give him “the thing.” But unfortunately, Gabriel doesn’t remember what this thing is.

So, Aziraphale and Crowley need to figure out what is really going on.

An official summary for Good Omens Season 2 reads:

“A naked archangel turns up at the door to renegade angel Aziraphale's bookshop, with no memory of who he is or how he got there, and Aziraphale and retired demon Crowley's lives become extremely complicated. Heaven and Hell are both desperate to find the runaway. As Crowley and Aziraphale attempt to fix a human romance, things become increasingly unsafe for them, in the past and the present.”
