David Tennant returns as the Fourteenth Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary special The Power of Doctor. But compared to other doctors who have taken the role of the previous Time Lords, Tennant has a new regeneration outfit.
The Doctor will usually experience a regeneration after a few years, meaning a new actor will take the character. When the physical transformation occurs and a new Time Lord emerges, they will have the same outfit as the last character. However, when Jodie Whittaker regenerated into Tennant, he had a new set of clothing.
The Fourteenth Doctor's New Regeneration Outfit
Writer Russell Davies explained the reason behind the Fourteenth Doctor's regeneration outfit in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine via Radio Times.
"I was very certain that I didn't want David to appear in Jodie's costume," he said.
He continued that they had to break the show's rule to avoid any problematic implications, showing Tennant in women's clothes.

"I think the notion of men dressing in 'women's clothes', the notion of drag, is very delicate," he explained. "I'm a huge fan of that culture and the dignity of that, it's truly a valuable thing."
However, knowing that this is something new, Davies added that it had to be done with "immense thought and respect."
"With respect to Jodie and her Doctor, I think it can look like mockery when a straight man wears her clothes," he stated. "To put a great big six-foot Scotsman into them looks like we're taking the mickey."

David Tennant's Return as the Fourteenth Doctor
Doctor Who Magzine also dropped several teasers about Tennant's return as the Fourteenth Doctor in the three-episode Doctor Who special The Power of Doctor.
Fans will again see the Jessica Jones star as the new Time Lord following Whittaker and before Ncuti Gatwa takes the role of the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who Season 14.

It also revealed that BBC had begun a partnership with Disney+, so the series will be moving to the platform. This also means the show can have a bigger budget for its production.
Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, The Power of Doctor, will be out in November 2023.
