Anime live-action adaptations are nothing new, but this latest one is probably a film that not many expected. Recently, Warner Bros. Japan announced that a Cells at Work! live-action movie is currently in development.

The upcoming movie was announced via Warner Bros’ official Japanese Twitter account. There, details about the film were revealed.

While some live-action adaptations of popular anime works are done in the West, this one will be produced in Japan, and it will likely feature a completely Japanese cast.

It may not be a shounen anime that’s as popular as the likes of Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, but Cells at Work! is still a well-known anime thanks to its unique premise.

Specifically, the main series is set inside a human body and follows the daily lives of various anthropomorphized cells as they fulfill their duties to keep the body functioning.

While the manga was fairly popular in Japan, its popularity exploded with the release of the anime adaptations by David Production, the studio behind the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime.

The original Cells at Work! manga may be over, but the franchise continues to get more projects thanks to its popularity.

It also helps that the series’ story is quite accurate, making it a great learning tool aside from being entertaining.

If the main story followed a typical human body, there’s a spinoff titled Cells at Work! Code Black that's set inside an unhealthy man’s body.

There are also other spinoffs that focus on specific cells such as the macrophages and the white blood cells.

While fans are still eagerly awaiting a new anime project, a live-action adaptation was surprisingly confirmed recently.

But because it was only just announced, the movie is still very early into its production.

What we do know right now is that it will be directed by Hideki Takeuchi, a director who has worked on several live-action anime adaptations such as Nodame Cantabile and Thermae Romae.

Given that the series is set inside a human’s body, it’ll be interesting to see how the live-action movie will present the body’s various locations.

It will also likely be an effects-heavy movie unless the production can get creative with the sets.

Currently, there’s no word yet on when the movie will be released, nor is there info on the cast, though more details are going to be revealed at a later date.
