At the annual Shogakukan Manga Awards, Call of the Night took home one of the biggest prizes as it was awarded Best Shonen alongside another popular title.

The Shogakukan Manga Awards is one of the most prestigious awards in the manga industry.

It selects the best manga titles in four categories: Shonen, Shojo, General, and Children. Each winning title will get a bronze statuette and JPY 1 million (around USD 7,700) in prizes.

This award is sponsored by the publisher Shogakukan, the owner of publications such as Weekly Shonen Sunday and Monthly Shonen Sunday.

However, this award is not limited to Shogakukan-published works only.

In the General category, the manga series Medalist took home the prize. This manga is published in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine.

It follows Tsukasa, a figure skater who trains fifth grader Inori to become a medal-winning figure skater.

Meanwhile, Ashita, Watashi wa Dareka no Kanojo took the Best Shojo Manga prize.

This series began serialization in Cygames’ Cycomi, and it follows Yuki, a rental girlfriend who becomes close with a client of hers named Tsuji.

The Best Children’s Manga category winner is Ui x Kon, a manga that’s serialized in Shueisha's Ribon magazine.

Its story follows Ui and Kon, two students who must stay together in a shared dorm room as they aim to have the world’s best wedding.

Finally, the 68th Shogakukan Manga Awards’ Best Shonen category winners are two titles.

The first is Ao no Orchestra, a series that follows Hajime Aono, a violin prodigy who stops playing due to some family issues.

Soon though, he begins playing again after joining his high school’s orchestra club.

The other Best Shonen winner at the Shogakukan Manga Awards is Call of the Night (or Yofukashi no Uta in Japanese), a manga by Kotoyama, the creator of Dagashi Kashi.

Call of the Night winning Best Shonen might be a surprise to some, though the series has become quite popular recently, especially as its TV anime adaptation aired in the Summer 2022 season.

What makes the series worthy of an award is that it’s far from your usual battle shonen that focuses heavily on fights.

Instead, it features a unique vampire premise along with a hazy, late-night feel that many readers love.

The Call of the Night manga continues to be serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday.

As for the anime, there’s no word yet on whether there will be a second season.
